  3. Mission Life The purpose of the missions… • Were for religious purposes. • They wanted the California Indians to follow the Catholic religion. Many of the California Indians worked. • Men farmed and cared for the animals. • Woman made soap, candles, cooked, sewed and gardened.

Problems at the Missions • California Indians couldn't leave the missions. • They had to follow Catholicism, the religion of the Catholic Church. • Many died form diseases, like measles and smallpox Europeans brought. • California Indians destroyed San Diego in 1775 • California Indians never joined a mission after that.
