  2. Agenda • SmartGrid • Distribution Automation • Technologies toapply • WhyDistribution Automation? • Case StudyEMCALI • Conclusions • References

  3. ¿Smart? Digital technology, which provides two-way communication between the power utility and its customers.  Efficiently Sustainably Profitably Safely. http://smartgrid.ieee.org, «Thesxpertisetomakesmartgrid a reality

  4. DistributionAutomation • Automation equipment and functions • Remotely monitor and coordinate assets • Operate assets with or without manual intervention. http://smartgrid.ieee.org, «Thesxpertisetomakesmartgrid a reality

  5. DistributionAutomation • Taking information about my assets installed for making decisions • Optimizing the response time to equipment faults and the possibility to be operate in distance • Making self-restoration in grids, automatically or in distance • Having faster recovery of the fault and faster repair of service • Optimizing the maintenance planning

  6. DistributionAutomation The grid has to: • Distributed energy resources integration • Volt and Var control and optimization • Power quality measurements • Distribution line monitoring • Fault location, isolation and service restoration • Remote controlling of feeder reclosers and switches

  7. DistributionAutomation GE, <<Digital EnergyOptimización de la Distribución, Abril 2012>>

  8. DistributionAutomation We are lookingfor «Self-Healing» Repair automatically the power in sections that don’t have faults in the system after that one fault has been detected and isolated.

  9. Technologies toapply: • GIS Managing the assets of the company and coordinate the maintenance andthe clients management. • SCADA Management and operation of equipment and the protection of the grid in distance and real time

  10. Technologies toapply: • SWITCHGEAR  Operation of the opening and closing, with direct communication to system administrators.Breakers, Reclosers> REMOTE TERMINAL UNITSData Acquisition> COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

  17. Economicanalysis Value KW/h: $200 Save 160 KW/h Saveannually: 160 KW * 8760 h * $200/KWh = $280.32 Million Ifweapplythe 100%, thesaveapproximatelyis $5606.4 Million ≅ $2.5 Million US

  18. Conclusions The automation of the distribution can reduce power system losses and achieve significant economic savings for network operators and customers. The automation of the distribution is in a profound process of transformation and modernization, which will allow the network to be more safely and reliably. The automation of the distribution is a new issue in the national engineering, it has many economic and technical advantages to the system, but that requires a large investment and support to become a reality
