  22. QUICK LOOK: Document AML • SOURCE: ESRI • WEBSITE: esri.com • PLATFORMS: UNIX/X & Windows NT • REQUIREMENTS: ARC ver 7.0.4 and 7.1.X • mp COMPLIANT: No • SUPPORT: Yes

  23. Document AML Directory To begin documentation, use CREATE command Arc: document <file name> create

  24. Document AML Basic Documentation Menu Use information developed in contact and distribution file templates.

  25. Document AML Browse Contact Screen Type in contact code here. This screen is used to access contact information that has been created as a template by the user. Each citation needs to be created only once in the Contact file template.

  26. Document AML Browse Distribution List Type in distribution code here. This screen is used to access distribution information that has been created as a template by the user. Each citation needs to be created only once in the Distributor file template.

  27. Document AML Document Reference Menu(Source Information) File name automatically taken from coverage.

  28. Taken from coverage automatically. Document AML Definitionfor Polygon Attributes This is the first screen for documenting polygon attributes (.pat).

  29. Document AML Item Definition Taken from coverage automatically. This screen will repeat for each polygon attribute in the coverage.

  30. Taken from coverage automatically. Document AML Definitionfor Arc Attributes This is the first screen for documenting arc attributes (.aat)

  31. Document AML Item Definition Taken from coverage automatically. This screen will repeat for each arc attribute in the coverage.

  32. Document AML Text Editor Options User has choice of 3 editor tools.

  33. Warnings to user…rules to follow. Document AML Narrative References

  34. Document AML Using the vi Text Editor Option This portion of the documentation is done manually in a text entry format.

  35. These sections were added to Document AML in ARC/INFO versions after 7.0.3 in an attempt to make the documentation compliant with the FGDC Standard: Currentness_Reference Maintenance_and_Update_Frequency Access_Constraints Data_Set_Credit Completeness_Report Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report Cloud_Cover

  36. Version 7.0.3 Templates could be constructed from Browse Screens User enters pathname to access templates from Browse Screens Version 7.1.1 User must build templates first, and must have “write” permission to the info directory to do so Coverage with metadata from earlier version does not activate Contact and Distribution templates, unless these were built in the info directory first Differences Between Document AML Versions 7.0.3 and 7.1.1

  37. FGDCMeta.AML

  38. QUICK LOOK: FGDCMETA.AML • SOURCE: Illinois State Geological Survey • WEBSITE: isgs.uiuc.edu/nsdihome/webdocs • PLATFORMS: UNIX/X • REQUIREMENTS: ARC/INFO • mp COMPLIANT: Yes • SUPPORT: Yes

  39. FDGCMeta.AML • What is FDGCMeta.AML? • FDGCMeta.AML is a simplified variant of ESRI’s Document AML for ARC/INFO • A simple tool to be used to create new FDGC compliant metadata for ARC/INFO Coverages • What Does FDGCMeta.AML Do? • Automatically gathers coverage and system specific metadata information (i.e.: projection, spatial domain, feature types and counts, etc.) • Writes this information out to the appropriate fields in a metadata file • Generates other headings for user input information • Opens the new metadata file in a text editor • The final metadata files are formatted for use with the FDGC metadata tools (xtme and mp)

  40. General Information On FDGCMeta • Supporting Organization: Illinois State Geological Survey • Contact email: nelson@muck.isgs.uiuc.edu • Operating System: UNIX (X Windows) and WindowsNT • Cost: No Charge, available free via internet • Download URL: http://www.isgs.uiuc.edu/nsdihome/webdocs/fgdcmeta.html

  41. Command Line Usage • FGDCMeta geo_dataset { CREATE { TEMPLATE | MINIMUM } | DISPLAY } • Discussion • CREATE option (default) Creates new metadata text file named <geo_dataset>.met in the current workspace (will not overwrite existing file). • TEMPLATE switch (default): Creates a field in the metadata text file for several data elements common to many data sets. Also generic statements such as use constraints and liabilities have been included. These can be customized as necessary. • MINIMUM switch: Creates an output file with minimal additional information to be added by the user. It includes only the Identification and Metadata sections (sections 1 & 7) plus other information that can be automatically generated. This output alone is NOT sufficient to complete a metadata file.

  42. Command Line Usage(continued) • DISPLAY option: This option displays an existing metadata file. It checks for metadata files in the following order: • 1. geo_dataset.met file in the current workspace • 2. geo_dataset.nar in the info directory of the geo_dataset • NOTE: Only the geo_dataset.met file is displayed. If geo_dataset.met does not exist in the current workspace, then the program checks for the existence of a geo_dataset.nar file that may have been previously created with Document AML. A message will indicate the presence of a narrative file from Document AML, but Document AML must be invoked to view the file.

  43. Installation and Setup • FDGCMeta.AML should run as is, but will need to be decompressed (TAR format), and customization is recommended • Customization • First make a backup copy of FGDCMeta.AML with UNIX command: cp fgdcmeta.aml fgdcmeta.aml.bak (use Explorer with WinNT) • Open FGDCMeta.AML in a text editor • Set the variable for launching the editor of your preference on or about line 251 • &sv editr = /usr/openwin/bin/textedit for textedit • &sv editr = xterm -e vi for the vi editor • &sv editr = xtme for xtme editor

  44. Advantages of FDGCMeta.AML Over Document AML • A valuable ARC/INFO license is not consumed for text editing functions. An arc session can be run while the user creates metadata. • The time-consuming process of editing inside ARC/INFO and then reediting outside ARC/INFO is avoided. • Understanding the relationship between Document AML data entry fields and the associated FGDC CSDGM element fields is no longer required. Users need know only one metadata format.

  45. Advantages of FDGCMeta.AML Over Document AML • FGDCMeta.AML supports the continued use and development of the FGDC tools mp and xtme. • The output template can be user defined, and, therefore supports revisions to the CSDGM. It is flexible enough to evolve with FGDC metadata format as long as the CSDGM maintains its present structure. • It helps avoid the problem of the unknown evolution of ESRI metadata collection tools and support for Document AML.

  46. Disadvantages of FDGCMeta.AML Over Document AML • It is not as robust as Document.aml. • In its current form, it only supports a onetime query of DESCRIBE data from coverages, grids, and tins for the purposes of generating FGDC compliant metadata outside of Arc/Info. • It does not write the metadata to an INFO file or directly support update of an existing metadata file.

  47. Sections of FDGC Metadata Standard Found in Document AML That Are Not Included in FDGCMeta.AML • No ARC/INFO LOG data are included in FDGCMeta.AML • There is no support for section 5.1 Detailed Description under the Entity and Attribute Information section. The information is provided as the alternate Overview Description 5.2.
