  2. What is an orchestra? An orchestra is a type of musical ensemble. Wait a minute. What’s an ensemble??? An ensemble is a group of musicians who play music together.

  3. Okay, ensembles, got it. In an orchestra, there are specific instruments and groups of instruments that play together. Instruments are grouped into instrument families. Instruments in the same family are similar to each other in certain ways.

  4. The String Family Instruments in the String Family make sound using strings. String Bass Violin Viola Cello

  5. The Woodwind Family Instruments in the Woodwind Family are either made of wood or use a wooden reed, and they make sound when someone blows air through them. Flute Bassoon Clarinet Oboe

  6. The Brass Family Instruments in the brass family are made of brass (a type of metal), and you buzz your lips into a mouthpiece to make sound. Tuba French horn Trumpet Vecteezy.com Trombone Vecteezy.com

  7. The Percussion Family Instruments in the Percussion Family are instruments you hit, shake, or scrape to make sound. Snare Drum Bass Drum Timpani Xylophone Images by vecteezy.com

  8. The Orchestra All of these instruments work together to form and orchestra. Usually orchestras sit down and perform music from a stage, but here is an example of an orchestra playing as part of a flash mob in Spain. See if you recognize the music!

  9. The Conductor Did you see the person waving their arms in the air in front of the musicians? That person is called a conductor. The conductor tells the orchestra how fast or slow to play, how loud or soft, and lots of other things, without using his voice. The conductors communicates everything with their hands! Can you think of ways you communicate without using your voice?
