  7. Resolving the Issue • Create new networks • Regional optical networks (RONs) • Low-density people often means low- density funding… • University money, state money are often in short supply • One possibility is federal grants

Lariat • Aborning regional optical network • Six states participating initially • Bandwidth upgrades (as high as 10 Gb) • Funded by Grant from NCRR of NIH • Montana State = lead institution • Ron Johnson (UW/PNWGP) = co-PI • “First and foremost” for biomedical apps. • Seen as a pilot project • Initial six-month planning phase
