  4. The Opportunity: Educational Service District 101 Adams County Health Department Ritzville School District
  5. Our Goals Raise awareness about tobacco Academic achievement Other health risks School policy Change Social Norm Social Norm posters Age and smoking enhancement posters Look at community policies
  6. The Learning: RUAD presentation TATU training SpeakOUT Numerous meetings with our advisors!
  7. Why: Many people don’t know the connection Prevent use at any age
  8. Do you know? 7% of smokers earn A’s versus 19% of non-smokers Students who use tobacco have more frequent absences from school and shorter attention spans
  9. Students who smoked were four times more likely to have academic risk then non-smokers. Healthy Youth Survey 2008
  10. Teens who use tobacco are: Community Intervention 2004
  11. Dependency If adolescents can be kept tobacco free, most will remain tobacco free for the rest of their lives.

  13. Policy Presentations: We will be facilitating presentations: School Staff School board County Commissioners City Council Possibly others
  14. Social Norms Campaign A social norm is a behavior, thought or feeling shared by most of the people in a given group. Using Healthy Youth Survey Data we created posters that show “most of us” aren’t using tobacco.
  15. Our Principal~ Age and smoking enhanced to age 65
  16. Amazing Race End of year event Will have a tobacco prevention component All students receive a water bottle with tobacco prevention message
  17. End of year Barbeque hosted by school every year Handout ice cream sandwiches with tobacco free policy message Our School Policy: Everyone is Tobacco-Free All the Time Everywhere!
  18. Target Audience Ritzville Community members Parents Adams County Policy Makers Ritzville Schools All students 5th grade and above
  19. People Reached: We hope to reach over 1200 people in our school, community and county
  20. Budget: In-Kind ESD 101 Jana’s time and travel Adams County Health Karen’s Time $1500 Poster printing Giveaway items Water bottles Ice cream sandwiches
