Today’s Agenda & Goals • Review individual goals and SAAC Mission Statement • Selection of the Sunshine State Spirit Showdown winner • Prepare for Student-Athlete Leadership Seminar • Mental Health Discussion with Dr. Amanda Alexander • Enriching the Student-Athlete Experience: Group Presentations
Individual Goals • Form a Student Leadership Group at your school • Work together with fellow leadership members to organize a volunteer effort • Report to SAAC with the results of your volunteer efforts and achievements of your local school’s leadership group
SAAC Mission Statement “We work to represent the best interests of all student-athletes by presenting their concerns to the FHSAA, thereby developing initiatives for future improvement. Our goal is to promote the advancement of sportsmanship and integrity by fostering an ethical, safe, competitive environment on and off the field.”
Facilitative Leadership – Working as a Group • Everyone needs to be heard • Respect all other opinions • Agree to Disagree • Reach your objectives • Work with timelines • Bring a problem, bring a solution
Sunshine State Spirit Showdown:Overview • Videos must be between 90 seconds and 3 minutes • Must also include at least 30 seconds of discussion about why school should be winner • Cheers must be positive • Sportsmanship is the overall goal for this program • Submission videos were sent to FHSAA by February 1 and YouTube playlist is created with all of the submissions • Videos that meet the requirements will be uploaded to FHSAA social media. • Fans will be encouraged to watch all videos and vote on favorites using Survey Monkey link on social media sites
Sunshine State Spirit Showdown:Choosing a Winner • Fans will be encouraged to watch all videos and vote on favorites using Survey Monkey link on social media sites • Fan votes will be divided by school population and the resulting percentage will determine how many of the ten possible bonus points the school will receive to keep competition fair amongst large schools and small schools • SAAC makes final decision on winner which will be determined based on the following criteria: • Positive sportsmanship • Student body & community participation • School spirit • Originality of cheers • Organization of the group and student body • Overall fun • How well did the school follow guidelines • Social media votes
Sunshine State Spirit Showdown Sixth Annual School Spirit Competition Entries: • Atlantic Coast (Jacksonville) • Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville) • Choctawhatchee (Fort Walton Beach) • Fort Myers • Fort Walton Beach • Lake Howell (Winter Park) • Plant City • South Walton (Santa Rosa Beach)
Sunshine State Spirit Showdown:Your Task – Selecting a Winner • Rate videos in each distinct category on a 1 – 5 rating scale • 1 being low, 5 being high • To keep the contest fair between large schools and small schools, • Fan votes will be divided by school population based on 2018 Population Report • The resulting percentage will determine how many of ten possible bonus points a school will receive. • Bonus points will be added to the overall score • Fan votes are only used to enhance the score provided by the SAAC evaluation • Winner will receive banner and plaque from FHSAA at a pep rally hosted by winning school

Student-Athlete Panel • Upcoming senior members of the SAAC will sit on a student-athlete panel with Associate Executive Director of Eligibility and Compliance Services to discuss hot topics within FHSAA and Florida high school sports community.
Mental Health Discussion • Introduction of Dr. Amanda Alexander • Licensed Psychologist • Certified Mental Performance Consultant • USOC Sport Psychology Registry • Review Questionnaire • Discuss Feedback • Where do we go from here?
Student-Athlete Experience As a team, you were tasked with the challenge to answer the following questions and provide suggestions for future improvements: • What do you see as strengths of the FHSAA? • Where do you want to see improvements? How do you propose making these improvements? • What do you want out of a championships experience? • Should recruiting be allowed in high school sports? • How has open enrollment impacted the athletic teams at your school? • How would you put our member schools in classifications? What factors should determine the classification system? • Student’s choice topic
Additional Involvement • Student Volunteer Program • Opportunity for SAAC members work a state championship through assisting FHSAA staff members, acting as a media aid, helping with press conferences and awards ceremonies. • Sectional Appeals • Opportunity for SAAC members to see due process in action. • Board of Directors Meetings • Opportunity for SAAC members to present to Board of Directors to discuss goals and accomplishments of the committee. • Looking for SAAC members to present on the following dates: • Monday April 29 at 9 a.m. or Tuesday June 11 at 9 a.m.
