  2. How to get LEUs • Attend a conference • Take a class from WebJunction • Take a college course • Cheat and lie (not recommended)

  3. Problem with LEUs • Currently all of the options available take either • Time • Money Both of these are currently in short supply.

  4. LEUs and You • LEUs are required by the State of Indiana • Staff will need anywhere from 50-100 LEUs in a five year period • Most staff currently have fewer than 10 LEUs

  5. ACPL LEU Solution • ACPL resources available • Staff • Physical plant • Technology

  6. ACPL LEU Project • Utilizing its large staff, the ACPL can certify its professionals as state accredited LEU Trainers • Utilizing its IT capabilities, the ACPL can host a searchable database of courses and presenters on Insite, putting LEUs a phone call away

  7. Benefits of LEU Certification • Flexibility • Staff Trainers can present on any topic they have an expertise in relating to library business • Once a course has been assigned a credit value, it can be presented many times at many locations • Convenience • One Staff Trainer can visit many people in one agency at once, instead of that agency only being able to send one person to a conference • Trainers can visit an agency at a time when it is convenient for both parties involved

  8. Who can be Certified? • Any ACPL staff can be certified through WebJunction and the State Library • In order to be certified all that is required is filling out a Certified LEU Trainer form at http://in.webjunction.org/667 and attaching a resume.

  9. How Long Does This Take? • It takes roughly a month to be certified as a Trainer • It takes roughly 1 ½ months for a course lesson plan to be approved and assigned a credit value

  10. Logistics • Staff Trainers should be available to travel to different agencies to present their courses • This can be done when it is convenient for both parties

  11. How Will This be Coordinated? • Through the use of a database on Insite, managed by the Training Manager • This database will be searchable by course, presenter, and credit hours • An official process for booking and recording your credits will be created

  12. Why Would I Want to Do This? • You need LEUs • You want to share something you know about library services • You want to learn something you don’t know about library services • You want to meet a coworker that you have never met before

  13. What do I have to do? • Register to become a certified LEU Trainer • Encourge (or strongarm) your staff into registering to become certified LEU Trainers • Create at least one course to submit to the State Library

What Courses Can I Offer? • There are nearly endless possibilities for course offerings; examples include • Working with minority populations • Gaming in libraries • Romance readers advisory • Emergent literacy topics • Using Microsoft Office applications • Searching strategies for ancestry.com

  15. But We Have No Money… • Having no money is exactly the reason you need to use what you already have, which is… • A very large and talented staff with an incredible variety of interests and skills who can offer you LEUs at no extra cost

  16. But We Have No Time… • Sometimes you have to give a little to get a lot! • By sparing one of your staff for a few hours you allow a whole agency to earn LEUs • By another agency sparing one of their staff you allow all of your staff to earn LEUs • You can earn LEUs through Staff Trainer exchanges in a matter of hours, as opposed to the days that are required through traditional conferences.

  17. How Will I Do This? • Simple. Search the database and pick up the phone! • Search the database for a course you want • Pick up the phone and call the Staff Trainer • Arrange a time and place that is convenient • Clear it with the dept. head and confirm • Notify the Training Manager and get your LEU credits when the course is completed!

Proposed Timeline for Implementation • Our goal is to have the ACPL LEUniversity operational in January 2009 • Staff Trainer certification in Nov.-Dec. 2008 • Course submissions in Nov.- Dec. 2008 • Course accreditation by January 2009 • Database operational and ready for use by January 2009 • Classes start late January early February 2009

  19. Long Term Outlook • The ACPL LEU program has the potential to become a regional learning opportunity • By mid to late 2009 it is possible to start offering courses to surrounding library systems • The ACPL has many resources smaller libraries cannot match • This would increase our systems reputation and cachet and would allow smaller library systems that cannot meet their LEU needs to utilize our system. If necessary we could charge for this service to add another income source • This would also allow for professional networking and a strengthening of regional library capabilities.

In Conclusion • The ACPL has everything to gain and nothing to lose in the LEU project • It utilizes resources we already have • It is flexible and convenient • It has great potential for growth • It will help strengthen our organization’s service capabilities • It meets a mandatory requirement set by the State of Indiana at little to no cost
