  3. Requirement levels • Ages 5-16 Rec. Hockey • Club or Travel Hockey • Team USA Youth • Masters – Team USA Men or Women Reason – Consistency and standard throughout the sport (Refs)

  4. FUN FUN FUN • As a child’s first coach you have a big responsiblilty • Children play for the fun of it • Children want to be with their friends • Every player counts (count the coaches and to see if each coach lost one player a season, how it would effect our sport)

  5. TEACHERS • Responsibility – not just dad helping • Teachers – educational process to work with children • How children learn • Hearing • Seeing • Doing • Explain things slowly and clearly

  6. COACHES LANGUAGE • How we talk to children – tone and body language • Right way • “good job” • “nice try” • Wrong way • “you should’ve had him” • “that’s your fault they scored” • Praise Teach Praise • “nice shift Billy, next time when a player is in front of our net you want to lift his/her stick, good work in the corner Billy”

PARENT COACHES • Ask how many are parent coaches – most will be • Remember it’s not about your child • All parents think their child is great • Treat all children like your own • No special attention • Don’t have your child lead drills • All the other parents are watching you • They are keeping track of playing time • Be a dad on the ride home • “how was practice Billy” • “did you have fun”

  10. Your Team Attitude • If your team takes penalties – you are responsible • If your team yells at the officials – you are responsible • You have the team you build and the style of play you want • Boston - Pittsburg

  11. SAFTEY • Do not move player • Calm child down first • Talk and ask Questions • Keep helmet on • Recommend First Aid and CPR

  12. Coaches Safety • Don’t be alone with child in locker room, have team Manager or parent • Don’t drive player’s home, you are not a babysitter • Coaching girls – Locker room • Language – appropriate • Handling players

  13. Practice Plan • Do you have a practice plan • Review and explain each drill • Remind coaches • Arrive early • Write down drills • Explain drills to players before going on rink
