The Legacy of Greco-Roman Civilization • While Romans were proud of their ability to rule, they admired Greek culture • Greek, Hellenistic, and Roman culture eventually intertwined • Greco-Roman, or classical civilization • Romans adapted Greek art, literature and philosophy to spread Roman ideals of strength, permanence, and solidarity

  4. Roman Fine Arts • Romans were more practical and realistic sculptors than Greeks • Bas-relief sculptures to show groups of people • Mosaics were common among the rich • Frescoes were painted directly onto walls in rich people’s homes • Best preserved in Pompeii due to volcanic ash

  5. Learning and Literature • Stoicism was the main philosophy practiced by Romans • Virtue, duty, moderation, and endurance • Virgil wrote the Aeneid to celebrate Rome • Influenced by Homer’s writings • Livy and Tacitus – Roman historians • Livy used legends and Tacitus used facts

  6. The Legacy of Rome • Rome’s legacy is still evident today throughout the western world

  7. The Latin Language • Most words that we know are derived from Latin • Spoken in colleges long after the fall of Rome • Official language of Catholic church until very recently • Romance languages – languages with Roman ancestry • French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Romanian

  8. Master Builders • Invented concrete, the arch, and the dome • All evident in the Colosseum • Arches also supported bridges and aqueducts as they spread over rivers • Practicability of Roman architecture helps it remain popular (U.S.) • Roman roads were very advanced, and some are still used today

Roman System of Law • Romans believed that laws should be fair and apply equally to all people • Equal treatment under the law • Innocent until proven guilty • Accuser had to prove something happened • People should not be punished for thoughts, only actions • Laws that were stupid could be set aside • Roman law influences U.S. citizens daily

  10. Rome’s Enduring Influence • Rome strengthened western cultural tradition by strengthening what the Greeks had already started • One historian: • Rome never fell, it became an idea and will never die
