  1. DAILY QUESTION #1 DAILY QUESTIONS ALWAYS GO IN THE BACK OF YOUR NOTEBOOK!

  2. DAILY QUESTION #1 • Write your first and last name on both sides of popsicle stick with your period on the ends. • In one sentence, define the word biology. • What are 3 over all goals you have for this year? • (remember the definition of insanity) What do you want to do different this year? • List 2 professions you might be interested in doing when you “grow up”  THEN grab the papers on the front desk, one of each. 3 hole punch them both. • Pick 3 traits from people/teachers that you have decided you NEVER want to be like. • Rank these classes from your most to least favorite: math, science, history, english, foreign language. • Take out a piece of paper, tear it in half (hamburger style) and share the other half with someone else. Set it aside.

  3. What is Biology? Biology is the systematic study of living things and how they function, interact and adapt to their surroundings.

  4. D3 PLEASE HAVE YOUR NOTEBOOK ON YOUR DESK FOR ME TO CHECK. WE WILL DO DAILY QUESTION #2, REMEMBER THEY GO IN THE VERY BACK! And remember to write in complete sentences! • DQ 2 • Shoe Lab • Cover page/learning styles

  5. Daily Question #2 REMEMBER! DQ’s Go in the back!!! • How much (%) of your grade is the notebook worth in this class? • What are 3 things based off the syllabus that you should bring everyday to class. • What is the website address of my biology class? • What sport(s) do I coach? • Name the 7 steps of the scientific method (or whichever you can remember) • What does this mean: “People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.”

  6. Your very last page will be your parent teach form. Extra credit.

  7. D.Q.’s GO IN BACK! DQ 1 • ALWAYS write in complete sentences • Who is known as the “father of evolution? • 1. Charles Darwin is known as the father of Evolution. If you miss a D.Q. it is YOUR responsibility to make it up! *2. Test questions will be starred or underlined, in that case, write the ENTIRE question and all of the answers if it is a multiple choice. DQ 2 DQ 3 DQ 4

  8. Notebook cover/Surveys • You will need to create a cover for your notebook • You will also need to do 2 different learning styles surveys. • ALL THE DIRECTIONS ARE ONLINE!!!! • If you don’t have a computer, come here at break or lunch, or to another teacher, friends house or library!

  9. Notebook cover should be the first page you see. Include pictures about yourself or the things you like. BIOLOGY

  10. Day 4 C.O. – SW understand the importance of observations in scientific inquiry.L.O.- SW take notes and make inferences on a person based off of their shoe. • Take out your half sheet of paper that was labeled “Shoe Lab”. • Write “Observation 1” on the first line. Find someone’s foot that is AT LEAST 10 feet away from you. Don’t make it obvious, nor tell them you are using them, its part of the lab. Hopefully you pick someone you don’t already know. • Write down 10 or more observations about that foot/shoe from where you are sitting. You cannot get out of your seat to get a closer look. • Make a quick sketch of the shoe exactly where it is, even the obstructions. Try to be as detailed as you are able in the sketch and observations.

  11. Notebook Setup:Cornell Note Taking

  12. Notebook cover should be the first page you see. Include pictures about yourself or the things you like. BIOLOGY

  13. Then your syllabus On the backside of cover, put the surveys. FOLLOW WEBSITE DIRECTIONS!

  14. Table of Contents Title/Assignment Name P. # Graphing, Data (example) 1 Cells, Genetics, Gregory Mendell Animal Cell Diagram (example) 6 Your first 2 pages are for your TOC. Skip two pages then label that page, 1 in the bottom right hand corner. EVERY notebook check will have points for your Table of Contents. If it is not complete viz. there are no page numbers, no titles, or missing assignments; you will NOT receive full credit. You do not need to memorize EVERYTHING in life. BUT, you do need to know where to find it!

  15. INPUT OUTPUT Title/Topic: Date: Cornell Notes Key ?’s / Ideas / Title/Topic and Date are ALWAYS at the top. Fold/separate page about 2-3 inches in Key ?’s/Standards on the left. Your notes on the right side of the line/fold. Input (WHAT I GIVE YOU) goes on the right. Output – homework, graphs, etc… Standards 1. How do you set up your paper for Cornell Notes? • It organizes our thoughts. • It is easy to review • It is easy to do! • It organizes our thoughts! 2. Why do we use Cornell notes? • Homework • Special assignments • Charts/pics/graphs • or other assignments 3. Describe a special assignment and its components. What is a WOW? - - - 1

  16. Special Assignment: Bumper Sticker Bumpers have something to say.

  17. Special Assignment: Bumper Sticker They can show political interests

  18. Special Assignment: Bumper Sticker Bumper stickers can advertise a brand, logo, organization or people group.

  19. Special Assignment: Bumper Sticker They can be about anything!

  20. Special Assignment: Bumper Sticker You are a year older, so old, almost dead. If you could say one thing before you left this earth what would it be? Here is your assignment. Create a bumper sticker telling people your “Famous Last Words” What would be the last thing you would say, or the one thing you would hope people would know/hear from you if it was the only/last thing they heard. Please no profanity, drug/alcohol references. This will be on the top half of page “0” (next to page 1) Needs to have a title (5 points), 4 colors (5 points), and a description (5 points)

  21. Science = Observation Sir Isaac Newton Newton was a scientist in the 1600’s. The story goes that one day while sitting in his orchard drinking tea, an apple fell and hit him on the head. From that point he studied why, he observed. He concluded that the moon, the earth and literally everything was affected by gravity. Gravity was a puller. The stronger the pull, the more gravity. Have you ever asked why? Have you ever taken anything apart?

  22. The Nature of Science Main Idea: How do we “do” science? • Scientists observe. • Sometimes your observations/assumptions/hypothesis could be false, or not what you expected, but does that make your “experiment” a failure? • Many scientists have had revolutionary breakthroughs because of something in their experiment that they did not account for…. • For example….

  23. Science is Observation AlexanderFleming How many of you have ever been sick? While trying to find cures for harmful bacteria and viruses he noticed something that would revolutionize medicine. Lets back up…

  24. Science is Observation Scientists often use “petri dishes” to, grow, or try to kill certain bacteria in an isolated environment. Here you can see a lab assistant holding a petri dish with bacteria growing in it. AlexanderFleming

  25. Alexander Fleming BONUS! One day while he was working on some petri dishes (again) he had a runny nose and it dripped (NASTY) into the dish. He then noticed that it killed the bacteria he was working on! Thus, Dr. Bonehead Fleming found another cure by pure luck! Natural tears and nasal mucus that helped the body fight germs. LYSOZOMES!! Sound familiar? LYSOL is the derived from that concept.

  26. The Nature of Science Main Idea: How do we “do” science? • Scientists test results • Scientists have to ensure that their finding was not pure bonehead luck but actual retraceable steps and experiments. Scientists repeat experiments to ensure their accuracy.

  27. The Nature of Science Main Idea: How do we “do” science? • Scientists investigate • Through OBSERVATIONS, scientists formulate and answer questions about how things work. • Remember the assumptions or HYPOTHESIS we came up with about the person who wore the shoes? Scientists investigate, scientists ask questions. • Scientists plan experiments • Before you can experiment you have to plan what you are experimenting. • You must state exactly what you are going to test in order for someone else to copy it exactly and prove if it works.

  28. PROVE IT! Science = Observation Science tests what we can see… So lets see what you see….. Many professions rely on their ability to observe… Different points of view/emotions will give produce observations.

  29. Shoe Lab Observation 1: Find a shoe on the other side of the room and write 5 things about that shoe from where you sit, include a brief sketch of what you see from where you sit. Observation 2: Look again, what 3 things can you infer about the person wearing that shoe? Observation 3: Look AGAIN! What 3 other judgments/inferences can you make about that person based on their shoe whether you are right or wrong? Sometimes “observations” aren’t just looking. What decisions or judgments could you make just by looking at your shoes? Name 4 professions you think observations would be a critical skill to have?

  30. Have your cover/surveys out for me to check. You lose 5 points each day they are late. • Number pages 1-50 by MONDAY! (DON’T NUMBER YOUR DQ’s!) REMEMBER, your notebook should be in this order: • 1. notebook cover • 2. web surveys (both) • 3. syllabus • 4. 2 table of contents pages • 5. THEN page #1. • We will get our textbooks from the Library and then do a group activity.

  31. Paper Tower (page 2!) • On page “2” of your notebook, label it “PAPER TOWER”. • Using the scientific method (grab a chart if you need it), COMPLETE each step thoroughly to create a paper tower that AT LEAST 80 cm tall. With 1 piece of computer paper and 20 cm of tape. THAT’S IT! • Paper tower = 20 points: • 80-85cm – 14 pts; 86-90 – 16 pts; 91-95 cm – 18 pts; 96-100cm – 19 pts; 100cm+ 20 • Free standing (indefinitely) = 10 pts, stands for 2-5 sec – 5 pts, 10 sec – 7 pts, 15 sec - 8 pts, 20+ sec – 9 pts. • You MUST include and write down each step of the scientific method on page 2!

  32. Daily Questions #3 (*= test questions, write these down AND HIGHLIGHT THEM to review them later) REMEMBER!!!! Daily questions go in the back of your notebook. The slides will AUTOMATICALLY change after 5 minutes so you need to work quickly. HAVE YOUR HOMEWORK READY TO CHECK.

  33. Daily Questions #3 • *1.Two Students were testing the amount of fertilizer that would best promote the growth of strawberries. Which of the following could be an unavoidable source of experimental error? • Length of study • Variation in the strawberry plants • The cost of watering the plants • Fertilization during the study • *2.A computer model of cellular mitosis can simulate the aspects of cellular division quite well. However, a live microscopic observation can improve understanding because they • may reveal greater unknown complexities • Are easier than a computer model to view • Are the same each time • May provide division events in sequence

  34. Daily Questions #3 • *3. Which of the following could NOT be true for the results of a single experiment? • Results support a hypothesis • Results contradict a theory • Results are unexpected • Results prove a theory must be true. • *4. 39. The Way Science Works

  40. Daily Questions #4 (in the back!) 1. Make a Line graph of the average rainfall in California for the Last 10 years based on the chart on the right. Measured in inches. 2. Based on the chart, which year did we Receive the LEAST amount of rain? 3. Based on the chart, which year did we Receive the MOST amount of rain. 4. Round each number to its nearest whole Number and figure out the TOTAL average Rainfall California experienced each year. 5. Based on your answer, which year(s) is most like the average? C.O. – SW understand the importance of following directions and problem solving in the scientific method. L.O. – SW work together to solve problems with ropes and knots.

  41. Tying the knot (page 3) Pre-lab questions What do you think are the three most important things to pay attention to in a lab/experiment? Why would it be important to number your steps as a scientist? Why would it be important to include the exact materials and measurements used in an experiment? Why would you only want to test 1 variable at a time in an experiment?

  42. Tying the knot… Procedure Write and draw a diagram for each step in your notebook of how you would describe to a person how to tie a knot in a piece of rope assuming that they have never encountered a piece of rope before. Remember, assume they do not know anything! 3-4 minutes, share

  43. Tying the knot… Procedure Fix your directions to make it more accurate and REPRODUCE-ABLE. Failure RELIES on the ability to do something again in a different way to be successful the next time.

  44. Tying the knot… Procedure Now, see if you can solve this: lay your rope flat on your desk. You may not lift the rope or move the rope off of your desk until you have grabbed it with both hands. As soon as you grab the rope, you cannot let go. Now once you have it in both hands, tie a knot. Extra credit?

  45. Daily Questions #5 (in the back!) What would be the best measurement (from below) to use to measure the amount of (1) liquid in a soda can.(2) A cooking pot. (3) A swimming pool? A. Microliters (mL) B. Milliliters (mL) C. liters (L) What is your height? Convert to inches? Convert your height to meters (about 39 inches in 1 meter). How many days are in a year? Hours? Minutes? Seconds? (You DON’T need a calculator, do the math!) What unit of time would you use to measure Mr. McCabe.. Running to the drinking fountain Driving to San Diego Driving to New York I gave you $1,000. Draw a pie chart representing how you would spend your money.

  46. The Way Science Works (start notes on page 1) • Identifying problems, planning experiments, recording observations and reporting data are most important to any scientist. • Critical thinking is thinking logically • Blue light special, aisle 3… who doesn’t want to save money! • As a productive person (not just science) you need to be able to communicate AND READ DIRECTIONS! • PAGE 0, under bumper sticker, label it: Tying the Knot. • What are examples of skills that Biologists need?

  47. The Way Science Works • The Scientific Method is a series of steps used to organize thoughts and plan an experiment in order to solve a problem. • Scientists need to REPRODUCE experiments, so a clear hypothesis (if…then.. Statement) and accuracy are very important. • Copy this chart AND COLOR on TOP HALF of page 5! Describe the steps of the Scientific Method C.O. – SW understand essential skills that scientists need to be successful. L.O. – SW diagram the scientific method and create a cube that represents a system.

  48. 1. Observe/ Choose a problem. State the problem as a question. 7. Draw Conclusions. Analyze your data and summarize your findings. 2. Research your problem. Read, get advice, and make observations. Steps of the Scientific Method 6. Organize your data. Create a chart or graph of your data. 3. Develop a hypothesis. Make a prediction about what will happen. 5. Test your hypothesis. Conduct a controlled experiment and record the data. 4. Design an experiment. Plan how you will test your hypothesis.

  49. Paper towel lab • You will be in groups of 2-3 (no more than 3) • You will MAKE UP your own lab that can be directly tested by another group. • You have the following materials. • This HAS to be completed by the end of today.

  50. Paper towel lab Day 2 • Have your homework on your desk ready for me to check. • You will have 10 minutes to finalize your experiment for a different group. • You cannot use the supplies, you can only write/rewrite your directions so that its more clear. • Should look like this (according to the directions)
