Squaring Stock by Hand • 4. Mark thickness of stock with marking gauge from good face on both edges and ends. Plane second face to lines and check for flat and square. 1. Plane face smooth and flat. • 2. Plane first edge. Test for flatness with straight edge and square to face with try square. Mark face and edge after testing. • 5. Using try square, mark first cut to square end. Cut end off with backsaw. • 3. Using marking gauge, mark width of piece on both faces and both ends. • 6. Measure final length from square cut end. Using try square make mark all around stock and cut off with backsaw.
