  2. Why Did King Henry Break with Rome? Henry VIII was a catholic when he first came to the throne of England. The Pope gave him a title “Defender of Faith,” because he had wrote a book defending the Pope’s title. But this all changed… V V

  3. Then... • The Pope and King Henry had fallen out. It was over Henry’s marriage to Anne Boleyn. He had been married before and this was against the Catholic Religion. But were there other reasons?

  4. Henry’s Wives. Henry had six wives. The Pope disagreed with this. Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn,Jane Seymour in June, 1509 January 1553. May 1536 Anne of Cleves 1540 Catherine Parr Catherine HowardJuly 1543 19 days later

  5. What were his reasons? I believe that there were 3 main reasons why King Henry broke away from Rome: • Because of Economic reasons. • Because of Personal Reasons. • And Because of religious reasons.

  6. Economic Reasons. What does Economic mean? Economic means to do with money and finance. In this time, rulers had to pay a lot of taxes towards the Pope. People of the time say that the Pope was more Greedy and selfish than a religious leader.

  7. Personal Reasons. Henry was growing old and worried. Who would take the throne once he dies? This is one among many of the personal reasons King Henry had for breaking away from Rome, as he only had daughters.

  8. Religious Reasons. Anne Boleyn was a protestant. This means that the religion she was part of, protested against the Catholic Church. They believed that the Pope and Cardinals were to greedy. These complaints were issued at the time of which Henry was in a feud with the Pope. So he decided to join the Religion and make himself head of the English Church.
