  3. Properties of Bases • Bases are electrolytes. In other words, their solutions conduct electricity. • Bases cause indicators to turn colors, more about this in unit 2. • Bases neutralize acids to produce a salt and water.

  4. Properties of Bases • Aqueous solutions of bases taste bitter and feel slippery. Never taste laboratory bases. • Bases emulsify (help break down) fats and oils. Ammonia and lye are good cleaners because they can break down grease.
