  2. What it takes: Licensed practical nurse-LPN Average salary, $45,000 (ZipRecruiter). 12-month career/technical program. Works under a supervising, licensed RN. Privileges vary from facility to facility. Jobs are harder to find: nursing homes, long term care, physician's office. Many employers will reimburse to advance license. Registered Nurse-RN Average salary, $55,000 (ZipRecruiter). 2-year program, diploma. Works under their own license. Entry-level position for most hospitals. Many employers will reimburse to advance education.

  3. What it takes: Bachelor of Science in Nursing-BSN Average Salary, $90,000 (ZipRecruiter) 4-year degree, accredited colleges. Works under their own license. Entry-level position for Magnet hospitals. Many employers will reimburse to advance education. Combines RN education with: ethics classes, world religions, specialized nursing classes, management classes. Nurse Practitioner/MSN Average Salary, $95,000 (ZipRecruiter). 2-year program after BSN. Works independently under prescribing physician. Diagnoses, prescribes, plans care, refers to specialists. Can specialize in OBGYN, peds, surgery, internal, etc. Doctorate in Nursing may become the new educational level for NPs.
