  7. Synthetic antioxidants -butylatedhydroxyanisole (BHA), -butylatedhydroxytoluene (BHT) -tert-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ), are widely used in the food industry because they are effective and cheaper than natural antioxidants. Their safety, however, has been questioned.

  8. Ito, et al., (1986) reported that BHA was carcinogenic in animal experiments. At high doses, BHT may cause internal and external hemorrhaging, which contributes to death in some strain of mice and guinea pigs. This effect is due to the ability of BHT to reduce vitamin K-depending blood clotting factor (Ito et al., 1986).
