  2. Course Description This course explores legal, ethical, and policy dimensions of privacy, technology, and security issues. While concerned mainly with information technology, these issues extend to personal, societal, cultural and other aspects of existence in a modern technological society. Because of the diverse nature of privacy and security issues, this course is team taught by an attorney and an information security professional. The course will address questions concerning what current legislation governs privacy and security in the U.S., what ethical and value considerations are relevant to current and projected laws, and how policy is formulated in response to legal, moral, and practical constraints within a modern, technological, and global economic environment.   3. Course Objectives Primary Objective Students will gain an understanding of the range and breadth of ethical, policy, and legal issues related to technology, particularly information technology. In addition, students will explore approaches to analyzing and addressing these ethical, policy, and legal issues. Supporting Objectives • Students will learn and apply basic ethical approaches to technology driven social issues • Students will gain an understanding of the basic legal framework supporting cyber technologies • Students will examine information technology and related technologies, particularly technologies of the past 10 years and those emerging • Students will apply the legal and ethical frameworks described above to the impact of recent and emerging technologies on social policy, both in the United States and globally • Students will particularly explore the issue of privacy in today's technological environment, both in the United States and in other cultures ITIS6362 - Fall 2008

  6. The current event assignment is a five-minute presentation about an article (paper or web) that involves IT technology and an ethical, legal, or policy issue or combination thereof. The presentation is worth 50 points and will be evaluated as follows: Topic requirements met Presentation preparation Use of visual aid (no PowerPoint slides) Meeting 5 minute time limit. Individual Research Paper • Topic to be chosen in mutual agreement with the professor • Must deal with the legal, ethical, and social policy issues of one or more selected information or information related technologies General Guidelines Topic must be approved by the instructors and be related to information technology (IT) Project topic must be submitted by September 15, 2008 Formal outline (1-2 pages, double spaced) must be submitted by September 29, 2008  Final paper (8-10 pages, 12 point, double spaced) must be submitted by December 1, 2008 Term Paper Structure Problem Statement Background and Research Set-up Presentation of Legal Arguments Presentation of Ethical Arguments Discussion/Conclusions/Recommendations References/Bibliography Grading Criteria General Composition   15   Statement of Problem  15 Legal Arguments    35  Ethical Arguments  35 ITIS6362 - Fall 2008

Team Role Play All members of the group must participate and the role play must cover the following: • The role play must address the topic and major points covered in the outline • The role play scenario must be described before starting (the “set-up”) • At least three different points of view (roles) must be presented Grading Criteria • Role Play Design and Set-up 30 • Presentation  20 • Coverage of Topic and Major Points 40 (Including both legal and ethical considerations) • At least Three Points of View Covered 10 ITIS6362 - Fall 2008
