  1. Mechanical testing for the ELM and VS conductor Jin Huan 2012-04-19

  2. Contents • Three point bend test • Three point bend cyclical test • U-bend cyclical test • Cyclic test on the copper conductor sample

  3. Three point bend test • The instrument parameters • Model: MTS-SANS CMT5000 • Space length: 550mm • Max permissible loading: 100kN (≤70kN) • Test conditions (ELM &VS) • Test temperature: RT • Strain rate (ASTM D790 procedure A) : 0.01 mm/mm/min • Sample length: 500mm

  4. The experimental instrument The relationship of the middle ELM and the supports The assembly drawing of the fixture and the sample

  5. Three point bend cyclical test • The instrument parameters • Model: SUNS PLS-100 & Instron 8800 • Max permissible loading: 100kN (≤70kN) • Frequency range: 0.01-30Hz   • Test conditions (ELM) • Test temperature: RT • Test frequency: 5Hz • Cycles: 20*30000 • Sample length: 500mm • Load: ??? (according to the analysis results)

  6. The assembly drawing of the fixture and the sample The experimental instrument Analysis results of three point bend test for ELM conductor

  7. Subtest • X-ray test: before and after cyclical test • Electrical properties: tested before and after cyclical test • Mechanical performances: tested after cyclical test • (sampled from different location)

  8. U-bend cyclical test • The instrument parameters • Model: SUNS PLS-100 & Instron 8800 • Max permissible loading: 100kN (≤70kN) • Frequency range: 0.01-30Hz • Test conditions (ELM) • Test temperature: RT • Test frequency: 1Hz • Cycles: 30000 • Sample: U-bend & R=219mm • Load: 83kN • Subtest • Before and after the cyclical test: X-ray and electrical tests

  9. R=219mm The min arc of the ELM coil in Catia model The assembly drawing of the fixture and the sample Load Rectangulartube Wire cable Thermal stress of the ELM coils FInconel625=405x106x3.14x10-6x(59x59-51x51)/4=279.774kN FCuCrZr=105x106x3.14x10-6x(46x46-33.3x33.3)/4=83kN R=219mm

  10. Cyclic test on the copper conductor sample • Aim: to model the thermal stress and electrical load on the • copper conductor • Test conditions (ELM &VS) • Test temperature: RT • Frequency: 5Hz • Cycles: 20*30000 • Sample length: 300mm • Load: 1) two ends: thermal load • 2) middle(width,200mm): electrical load • ELM: 60kN/m*200mm*2=24kN • VS: 53.7kN/m*200mm*2=21.5kN

  11. Electrical load Thermal load Thermal load Sketch-map of the cyclical test

  12. Subtest • X-ray test: before and after cyclical test • Electrical properties (conductivity): tested before and after cyclical test • Mechanical performances: tested after cyclical test • (sampled from different location)
