  6. Developing an Argumentative Task Learning targets: • I can design an LDC argumentative task (Task 2) that will help students learn and apply important science content.

  7. Opening Activity • On a piece of paper jot down your ideas and what you know about learning styles.

  8. Opening Activity What did you know???

  9. Scenario • Our schools currently make extensive efforts to accommodate individual student modalities and learning styles, e.g., visual, auditory, mastery, artistic, interpersonal, etc. • Our schools have a written policy of planning multiple versions of all major learning activities, allowing students to self-select activities that best fit their learning style. • The additional time and resources needed to create these activities is funded by the site-based council. • After hearing a National Public Radio (NPR) broadcast on learning styles, members of the site-based council are reconsidering the policy of using school funds for teachers to develop differentiated versions of learning activities.

  10. Let’s listen to the NPR message. http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2011/08/29/139973743/think-youre-an-auditory-or-visual-learner-scientists-say-its-unlikely

  11. Learning Styles • The principal has asked you to speak to the site-based council about the NPR broadcast. • The principal wants you to provide your professional judgment on each of the major points of the broadcast and how those points support or refute the use of differentiating every learning activity for various learning styles. • It is your responsibility to assist the site-based council in making the best instructional decision for the students your serve.

  12. Learning Styles • Should our school continue to fund the time and resources for teachers to create multiple versions of all major learning activities based on learning styles/modalities? After listening to a NPR broadcast on learning styles and reading informational texts, write a speech for the site-based council that addresses the question and support your position with evidence from the NPR broadcast and texts.

  13. Learning Styles • Individually, write the opening paragraph for your speech. • List the major points and evidence you plan to share with the site-based council.

  14. Lesson Wrap Up • What did you pick up from the lesson? • Why were these items important/ effective/ memorable?

  15. Lesson Wrap Up • How were literacy and writing strategies incorporated? • How were learning styles incorporated?
