What is the purpose of Los Amigos? • To spend time interacting in Spanish doing activities that help build language as well as inspire the younger students to continue their studies in Spanish.
How do I sign up? • A link to the sign ups will be sent out by email & you must sign up prior to the mentoring session. • There is a maximum of 10 mentors per session • Spanish 3 or 4H teach Spanish 1 students in room 606 • Spanish 4 or AP or 5 teach Spanish 2 students in room 9 • A minimum of 6 mentoring sessions are required to be inducted into the Spanish Honor Society.
Dates Los Amigos 1 (Tuesdays) Los Amigos 2 (Wednesdays) • October 1st, 15th & 29th • November 19th • December 3rd & 17th • January 7th • February 11th & 25th • March 11th & 25th • April 8th • October 2nd, 16th & 30th • November 20th • December 4th & 18th • January 8th • February 12th& 26th • March 12th& 26th • April 9th
Necessities • A link to the sign ups will be sent out by email & you must sign up prior to the mentoring session. • You must always speak in Spanish. You may write in English but you may not speak English. • Print out the Project Sheet for Los Amigos Mentoring on Sharepoint • Lee Salkowitz>Soceidad Honoraria Hispanica>Shared Documents • Create a plan for session that includes activities • On the day of your mentoring session, you must bring your project sheet and the plan you designed to show the teacher for them to sign.
What kind of activities? • Read a children’s book and ask a lot of questions • Play a game in Spanish (board games, PanchoCarrancho, UNO) • Teach them a song (children’s or pop) • Look at pictures and tell a story • Find out what vocabulary they are working on & write a story • Talk about what they like to do • Talk about their weekend activities (past and future) • Do a mini whiteboard activity (draw something) • Show a video or movie clip (keep it to Disney/nickelodeon type programs)
Tips • Under class documents, there is also a Tips and Guidelines document with links to helpful websites. • Ask a lot of questions and if they don’t respond, chances are they didn’t understand you. • Any questions? jennapontillas@yahoo.com
