Exchange history • June 2005 "Go Live" consolidation of 60+ agency email systems • August 2005 Implemented BlackBerry Enterprise Server • Two major outages, January 2006 and January 2009 (During Legislative Session) • Six (6) Additional Exchange Front-End servers deployed since June 2005 • Four (4) Additional Microsoft ISA 2004 servers deployed since June 2005 • One (1) Additional BlackBerry Enterprise server deployed since June 2005 • One (1) Direct Attached Storage replaced since June 2005 • Several major software upgrades since June 2005 • Assessment and Design by Orion / iniCom

Exchange history • Basic email message, calendar, public folder, ActiveSync mobile device • 20,000 Outlook Web Access, Zero (0) Outlook 2003/2007 clients • Strict message hygiene policies • 32-Bit Hardware Architecture, 2 GB Fibre, 1 GB network • 100 MB Primary Storage / 500 MB Extended Storage • SMTP Relay service • Enterprise Vault (Separate Storage) • Custom Help Desk web application • Dell CX700 (SAN) for primary mailbox storage and backup stage • SAN and initial servers are leased

Current state • Primary storage is over allocated • Extended Storage is 15% utilized • 65-70% of clients use Outlook 2003 / 2007, not OWA as expected by design • User connections exceed set warning thresholds daily (Staff manually load balances connection between 10 exchange servers) • 95% of hardware is 32-Bit only. • Important upcoming dates • December 2009 • Dell CX700 and initial servers leased ends, out-of-support / warranty • Microsoft Premier Support Ends • January 2010 • Microsoft Software Assurance Expires • 30 Day Legislative Session • June 2010 • Microsoft Antigen Expires • 5-year initial contract ends • Virtualization • Two BlackBerry Enterprise Servers in production • Seven Microsoft ISA 2006 servers expected within 30 days. • Three other miscellaneous application servers • State of New Mexico, DoIT Owned Licenses • Exchange 2007 • Enterprise Vault 8.0 • ISA 2006 • Windows 2008 • Forefront for Exchange 2007 (Replace Antigen for Exchange 2003)

Future State • Microsoft Exchange2007 64-Bit (considered a transition, not an upgrade) • Increased user mailbox storage (expected minimum is 750MB) • New SAN • 99% virtualization • Five 9s (99.999%) High Availability • Network Load Balance for Microsoft ISA, Microsoft Exchange Client Access Servers and HUB transport servers • Microsoft Continuous Clustering Replication (CCR) for Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Servers • VMware virtualization production and solutions • Fault Tolerant SAN • 24,000 Outlook 2003/2007 clients and 5,000 OWA clients • Minimum 45 Day journaling • Re-designed / developed custom help desk web application • Self help services • Increased scalability • Increased user capacity • Potential for new servers and increased revenue • Email Retention (Email Archiving) • Email Encryption • SharePoint Services • Office Communication Server

Objectives • DR Center • High Availability • Archieval/Retrieval (FOIA/IPRA) • The primary object is transition from Exchange 2003 email system to Exchange 2007 email system including a hardware refresh. The Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007 are required to run parallel. Exchange 2007 requires 64-bit server hardware.
