  3. What is the Trekker Breeze? The Trekker Breeze is a handheld self-contained standalone GPS solution for people who are blind or who have low vision.

  5. Caution! Caution: The Breeze system is designed as an orientation aid only and must not, at any time, be used as the only aid while traveling. When using Breeze, users should always be vigilant, stay alert and pay attention to the immediate surrounding area. A conventional mobility aid like a cane or a guide dog should also be used. Breeze is not a mobility device. It is the user's responsibility to use this device with caution. Do not use headphones while walking.

  6. Features: Simplified Interface The Trekker Breeze does not require the user to have knowledge of the GPS system and it’s operation to understand concepts and information that the Trekker Breeze is communicating.

  7. Features: Pedestrian and Motorized Modes If the student’s speed is greater than 15 MPH Trekker Breeze knows the student is not walking. Walking = more announcements Motorized = Street changes and personal landmarks.

  10. What is GPS Actually? GPS = Global Positioning System 24 satellites in geostationary orbit send signals to GPS receivers that calculate a position fix

  11. Triangulation Latitude Longitude Altitude Is your position (Geographical coordinates) anywhere on Earth.

  12. Electronic Maps • The GPS system uses electronic maps to provide detailed and handy information about: - all street names and ranges of addresses - personal landmarks and commercial points of interest (POI)

  14. What is a Landmark? Landmarks = A specific position that you or your student wants the Trekker Breeze to remember. bus stop, bench, mailbox, trash can, entrance, light control, pole, etc.

  15. What is a Point of Interest (POI) Commercial Point of Interest (POI) = positions that are saved in the Trekker Breeze on the electronic Map. Restaurants, Hotels, Bus/Train stations, Schools, Medical, Pharmacies, etc.

  19. Well protected Trekker Breeze is made of a thick rubber. SD card and charger connection are protected by a rubber cover. To access these connections use your finger to lift the rubber flap and open the rubber cover.

  20. Two Functions • Each button on the Trekker Breeze has two functions: 1. Single Press 2. Press and Hold

  21. Where am I? Big round center key Describes direction of travel, addresses nearby, landmarks or commercial points of interest. Press and hold for list of commercial POI’s and landmarks around.

  22. Information Press = Information GPS status, battery level and speed Hold = Settings - menus that control Trekker Breeze settings

  23. Repeat Press = Repeat, Repeats last message/instruction Hold = Key Describer Mode

  24. Left, Right and Confirm Left arrow - goes back Confirm - confirms an action Right arrow - next instruction/intersection

  25. Record Press = Records a landmark Hold = Records a route name

  26. Explore Press = returns to explore mode Hold = Go back

  27. Go To Press = Select saved route Hold = Go to destination

  30. Lesson 1: Explanation and Create Landmarks Explain basics of Trekker Breeze Walk with student, encourage them to use the “Where am I?” key Help the student record a few personal landmarks

  31. Lesson 2: POI and Routes Review Lesson 1 Searching for commercial POI nearby Set as destination Right arrow - to hear route instructions - discuss with student Walk route

  32. Lesson 3: Step back Review Lessons 1 and 2 Step back give the student the chance to operate the breeze independently Note – Make sure the student is paying constant attention to their primary O&M source (Cane, Dog, Monocular)

  33. Holding Tips Cane and Dog user: One-handed use - Can use it without needing to stop walking. Younger students may need to stop and operate because of smaller hands. Note -- Never listen or use Breeze while crossing major intersection. Lower volume before approaching intersection.

  34. Settings: Hold Information = Settings Enable commercial POIS Right arrow to Verbosity - Press Confirm Right arrow to Points of Interest - Press Confirm Right arrow to name and direction - Press Confirm

  35. Settings: Other Settings: Adjust voice parameters Adjust metric system use Adjust other verbosity settings Hear About information - including serial number and software version

  36. Sharing Teachers Create Master SD card Simply copy to as many cards as necessary

  37. Battery Life and Charging Times Battery Life = 8 hours on full charge Full charge time = 5 hours

  38. Software Upgrades HumanWare from time to time makes software upgrades available to Trekker Breeze users to increase functionality and fix bugs Note – We recommend that all updates are applied to Trekker Breeze
