  3. ROLE OF THE COMMUNITY MEMBER • Advocate for the participant • Actively Participate in IRB meetings/reviews • Ask questions • Give your opinion • Review submissions • Maintain Confidentiality

  4. WHAT MAKES A GOODCOMMUNITY MEMBER

  5. FINDING A COMMUNITY MEMBER: • Considerations • Must posses basic computer skills • Availability: doctor appts, children • May need assistance if special needs • Incentive: honorarium, paid-parking

  6. FINDING A COMMUNITY MEMBER • Expectations • May be overwhelmed at first • May not be familiar with terminology • Reality of time constraints/ might have limitations on availability

  7. RESPONSIBILITIES OF BOARD MEMBERSHIP • Attend meetings: your input is needed • Be open-minded • Be vocal AND able to defend your opinions • Make time to: • Educate yourself • Familiarize yourself with IRB policies • Get to know your colleagues • Take notes

WHAT YOU OWE THE COMMUNITY MEMBER • Provide an opportunity for them to experience a session before committing to membership • Give them a partner/mentor to orient them to their duties • Offer assistance if the member has special needs • Provide Educations Resources • IRB Director should conduct a 1-on-1 ed session • Policy Literature • Technical references
