This October 2013 article by Ameer Yousif explores whether ICT contributes to job creation through improved efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness in sectors like manufacturing, telecommunications, and services. While these industries have achieved some theoretical benefits, the outcome in terms of job creation has been disappointing due to factors like automation, poor customer service practices, and untrained staff. The article questions whether ICT truly helps in generating more jobs or exacerbates unemployment by examining different sectoral experiences.

Facing the reality Ameer Yousif - Oct 2013
Theoretically • Cooperation between ICT & Businesses shall lead to: • Higher productivity • Improved efficiency • Reduced production Cost • Improved Safety • More environment friendly • Higher competition • Affordable products & services
Will try to answer this question by reviewing 3 sectors • Manufacturing • Telecommunication • Services
Manufacturing Sector • Huge & capital intensive projects • Highly automated • Achieved most of the theoretical objectives, BUT • Low number of jobs !!!
Telecommunication Sector • Technology intensive sector • Competition is very high • Worst example of CRM utilization • Many avoidable mistakes • Long queues & frustrated clients • Low number of jobs !!! • Staff dealing with clients are not trained well !!!
Services Sector • Highly automated • Long queues • Unhappy clients • Lower number of jobs
Why is that? • Good solutions leads to less jobs. • Badly designed solutions created more problems ! • Untrained young employees combined with bad solutions worsen the situation !!
So does ICT help in creating more jobs? Thank you
