Impact of Delayed Planting on Vetch and Rye Mixture Effectiveness.

This image illustrates a vetch and rye mixture where the combination of planting methods and a delayed planting date led to poor stand establishment and prevalent weed competition. The cover crop was broadcast on 09/20/08, with 60 lbs of rye and 30 lbs of vetch per acre. The resulting patchy stand exhibited many open spaces dominated by weeds, a common issue with broadcast plantings. Taken on 05/06/09, shortly before incorporation, it highlights the limited nitrogen fixation of only 10 lbs per acre from vetch compared to 57 lbs from rye.

  1. Figure 6. An example of a vetch rye mixture where planting methods combined with a delayed planting date resulted in limited stand with lots of weeds. This cover crop was planted 9/20/08 by broadcasting, with 60lb rye/acre, 30lb vetch/acre . The stand was very patchy with open spaces where weeds predominated, a common problem with broadcast plantings. Picture was taken 5/6/09 shortly before incorporation . Only 10 pounds of nitrogen per acre was fixed by the vetch while nitrogen scavenging by rye was much larger, averaging 57 pounds of nitrogen per acre.
