  7. Background Information

  8. The Teddy Stoddard Story is a story many years ago of an elementary school teacher. The author of this story is not identified or unknown. It was edited by Cecilia Wessner, editor-in-Chief of Popular Science magazine.

  9. Originally the story was longer than the text on the text book with two extra paragraphs for the ending as follows: • Paragraph 21 They hugged each other, and Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson’s ear, "Thank you Mrs. Thompson for believing in me. Thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference."

  10. Paragraph 22 Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back. She then said, "Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn’t know how to teach until I met you."

  11. Teddy Stoddard, the boy student in the story is now a doctor at Iowa Methodist in Des Moines that has the Stoddard Cancer Wing.

  13. Iowa Methodist Medical Center is the state's largest private hospital. Established in 1901 in a single building, today Iowa Methodist has become an important regional medical center and teaching hospital. It employs nearly 4,000 people and has 373 staffed beds (not including beds at Blank Children's Hospital). In January 2001, Iowa Methodist marked 100 years of service to central Iowa.

Some of Iowa Methodist's areas of specialization include cancer treatment, cardiac care, maternity and women's services, emergency and trauma treatment, physical rehabilitation, wellness programs, behavioral medicine, surgery, orthopedics, critical care, primary care, older adult services and home health care.

  15. Iowa Methodist is well known throughout the Midwest for cancer care. In 1956 it opened Des Moines' first radiation therapy department. In 1993 the John Stoddard Cancer Center became the first central Iowa facility to house all radiation, oncology and ancillary services in one location.

  18. 1. It got to the point that during the first few months… The phrase “to the point” means to the extent that, or up to the time when something develops or is achieved. Here it means her dislike for Teddy had developed to such an extent during the first few months…

  19. 2. she would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X’s… X’s in the sentence is the plural of “X” (cross), which teachers use to indicate the errors on students’ exercises or examinations. “F” here means “failure”.

  20. 3. It was all she could do, with the school play and all until the day before the holidays began and she was suddenly forced to focus on eddy Stoddard. In connection with the previous sentence, “all she could do” indicates that she could do no more than just realizing what the problem was with Teddy, because she had to organize the school play and everything for Christmas.
