  1. The Design ProcessThe Internet By: Alex Houtz

  2. The Identifying of the Problem • There was a serious problem in the United States during the Cold War when Russia launched Sputnik, a satellite. The United States thought that if the Russians could launch a satellite, they could possibly launch a missile from space. • The US wanted to respond with something of their own to share info with other military squads of the US faster and possibly keep a missile from striking. The group formed (ARPA) was designed to give the US a technological edge over other countries too. The main mission was computer science. Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) Sputnik Dwight D. Eisenhower initiated the research group ARPA.

  3. The Brainstorming • ARPA knew that they were making a “net”, so they named the project ARPANET. They then brainstormed about how they would make it work. • One guy named Leonard Kleinrock developed the theory of packet switching. He and ARPA were brainstorming ideas when he discovered it ( they were trying their own ideas first after brainstorming to see if they worked. ARPANET computers Packet switching

  4. The Design • One guy named Leonard Kleinrock developed the theory of packet switching. He suggested the idea to the ARPA and he and ARPA started on it. • The design and the work of and on ARPANET caused, in 1970, congestion that was stressing the program and breaking it down. This was a fault in the design. Luckily, they caught it before they started building the network and connecting it. Technicians that launched ARPANET.

  5. Build, Test, Evaluate, and Redesign • Although the breakdown was not good, ARPA was able to get updates, fix the program, and get on with connecting ARPANET with other systems. • It took ten years for ARPA to get the packeting right and all the details down. ARPA tested the program again and this time it worked better. More updates were installed and the system was made better still. They decided it was good and tried to connect it to three other computers. In 1969, ARPANET was able to connected with four computers! ARPANET’s connection with the four Computers.

  6. Sharing the Solution • In 1972, ARPA took the ARPANET to Washington Hilton for the first public demonstration. Although only able to carry light loads and being doubted extremely, the ARPANET was still going as a project. They made it better and connected it to universities everywhere in the United States. The people in the universities shared it with people in town. That is how the solution was shared. Washington Hilton

  7. Keep on Pushing The competition is on for The best browser. • Even though ARPA was successful, they wanted to make it better. The world wide web was invented to keep random websites organized. ARPANET then became the Internet. E-mail was put in the program and CDs were able to be inserted containing info (these are now our flash drives). The Internet has now become a huge part of society; a way to share info, chat with others, play games, and numerous other things. • Now other browsers are starting to pop up, like Mozilla Firefox. The Internet has molded society. Mozilla Firefox Internet Explorer

  8. The Design Process Meanings • Identify the problem: This means to see what the trouble or problem is. • Brainstorm: This means to think up solutions for the problem or trouble. • Design: This means to think the idea out, plan it, and look for holes and fix the holes up. • Build, Test, Evaluate, and Redesign: This means to put your plan together, test to see if your plan works, grade the performance of the plan, and redesign to make it better. • Share the Solution: This means to spread the thing that fixed the problem so others can use it and this will make the world a better place.
