WHO WE ARE • Founded by a sports mom in December 2006 • Governed by a four member Board of Directors • Serves high school student-athletes throughout New Jersey, with a current focus on at-risk students in the Essex County area. • Hosts four signature initiatives that incorporate service learning on both the high school and college student levels. Year One-2007The Workshop Series • Understanding NCAA Eligibility Requirements, provided by Karen Harris, M.A., KFH Educational Services • Understanding College Admissions Process, provided by Kevin Hudson, M.A., The Wight Foundation • Eating for Athletics, provided by Dr. Geraldine McKay, UMDNJ-Dietary Department • Sports Injury & Performance Enhancement, provided by Dr. James Gallucci, JAG Physical Therapy THE SATORI Athletic Organization

Year Two- 2008The Workshop Series • Athletes’ Saves Lives (CPR Certification), provided by David Morgan, Life Safety Services, Inc. • The Rise Magazine Signing provided by the University High School Girls Basketball Team • Sports Parents, Myths & the Athletic Scholarship provided by Simone Bellamy, Founder, SAO • Five Turnovers! Are You Ready for College Sports?, provided by Simone Bellamy, Karen Harris, and Felicia Oliver, Head Coach University High School of the Humanities. Year Three- 2009 Pilot of the Athletes Edge Project (AEP) March 2009 Half-day interactive sessions for athletes and parents with: • SAT, ACT, transcript reviews and worksheet calculation assistance • NCAA Eligibility advisement sessions • NCAA Eligibility Center registration assistance THE SATORI Athletic Organization

  7. Year Four- 2010 • April 2010- Charting the Success of Student Athletes with Mr. Glenn Terry, Asst. Director of the Client Relations, NCAA Eligibility Center, Indianapolis, Indiana (Master Class) • 4 School Districts Serviced • 1, 900 student-athletes, 200 School Counselors addressed in a three day visit • March 2010-Pilot of the Online Supplemental Education Program • Online grade and credit recovery courses for student-athletes • Individual test proctoring and progress monitoring • Coordination of grade reporting to the NCAA Eligibility Center and School Counselors • Laptop Loaner Program • May 2010-Tackling Financial Aid: Instructions for High School Senior Athletes THE SATORI Athletic Organization

Service Events • October 2008- Beyond Ball Series for Aspiring Athletes-Sports Conference at Science Park High School • October 2009-Running the Point for Pink Event-Sports Conference and Cancer Awareness Basketball Game honoring: Mrs. Debra Jones, mother of Olympic Gold Medalist, Cullen Jones • November 2010-The Eligibility Triathlon hosted by the service learning students of Seton Hall University’s Center for Community Research and Engagement (CCRE) THE SATORI Athletic Organization

Collaborations and Grantors • 2007-SAO becomes a Bonner Scholar Partner • 2008-Partnership with the Center for Community Research and Engagement at Seton Hall University (CCRE) (now in its 3rd year) • 2008-Support from Newark Municipal Council President Donald M. Payne, Jr. • 2008-Grant from the Provident Bank Foundation • 2009- Grant from the Provident Bank Foundation • 2009-Collaboration with Essex County Cancer Coalition and the Breast Center-Saint Barnabas • 2010- Collaboration with Newark Public Schools (NPS) • 2010-Organizatonal Member, NPS-Game Point Task Force • 2010-Collaboration with the NCAA Eligibility Center • 2010-Collaboration with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Office of Financial Aid • 2010-Grant from the African American Fund of New Jersey THE SATORI Athletic Organization

  11. WHAT’S THE CHALLENGE NOW? • SAO has provided some great services to student-athletes, but….. • Organizational visibility is not were it should be! • During this year of strategic planning we need to remain on the public radar, yet ensure we have time to properly plan for academic year 2012.

  12. THE BIG QUESTION? • The question for the locker room is how can we use technologies to keep SAO in the public eye? • Twitter? • Facebook? • SAO Website? • Newsletter • Other?
