  1. 9/11 • Began as a hijacking operation by 19 Arab militants • Hijacked 4 planes • Flight 11: Hit the WTC north tower • Flight 175: Hit the WTC south tower • Flight 77: crashed into the Pentagon • Flight 93: crashed in the fields near Shanksville, Pennsylvania • Took 2,750 lives • Within weeks President George W. Bush declared war against terrorism.

Terms to know: • Terrorism- War on Terrorism- new style of warfare • Muslim, Islam, Islamism Islamic Fundamentalism- Strict interpretation of Laws of koran and • Sharia- Islamic book of laws- non education of women, separation of women and men, subservience of women, no western influence, no smoking, drinking, eating pork, gambling, returning to traditional Islamic CULTURE • Secular- non religious governments • Middle East-Most ISLAMIC nations have NO DEMOCRACY- kingdoms, dictators

Who & Why? • Social, political, economic causes… • The Islamic worlds anger, despair and frustration towards the West and our foreign policy.. • Fundamental Islamic beliefs see Western Judeo- christianity as influencing and altering Islam--- • BELIEFS OF Islamic fundalmentalism such as Al Qaeda is to.. END WESTERN INFLUENCE and restore Islamic religion and government to muslim nations

  4. Al- Qaeda •  Meaning "The Base" is a global militant Islamist organization founded by Osama bin Laden • Formed in the late 1980s in Pakistan • It seeks to rid Muslim countries of what seems to be a “Western” influence and replace their governments with fundamentalist Islamic regimes.
