  3. Farny Facts • Born in Alsace, France • Painted over 150 paintings • Paintings were not recognized until 1950 • One of the most important 19th century painters • Paintings were usually about Indians • Adopted into and lived with a Sioux tribe

  4. More About Farny • Spent boyhood in pine forest of western Pennsylvania • Made several trips west including a 1,000 mile journey up the Missouri river. • Married age 60 • Died in Cincinnati,Ohio

  5. About the Painting • Not an an actual scene he witnessed • Oil on canvas • The event in the painting shows Farny’s view of the West • The dead buffalo in the painting was killed with a rifle that the Indians got in a trade with the whites. It shows how the whites influenced Indians.
