There he learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge's intentions of driving off the native humanoid "Na'vi" in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland. In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers intel for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by gung-ho Colonel Quaritch, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na'vi people with the use of an "avatar" identity. The CGI technology and performance capture technology that James Cameron used in Avatar revolutionised the film industry and made sure that 3D films could be the best they possibly can at this moment in time. Films like The Hobbit, Item 2, used Computer Generated Images to build characters like Gollum. Although they have done this previously, the advances that Avatar made ensured that this character looked the real deal. James Cameron said about Ang Lee’s Life of Pi “I feel like the technology we created has contributed to a masterpiece” This quote alone shows how Avatar has impacted other films such as Life of Pi. Ang Lee, like James Cameron, wanted to do his 3D film properly which is why he invested in similar technology that James used in Avatar. This illustrates the point that Avatar had a huge impact on the way 3D films were produced after this film was. How did this technology impact other films? • James Cameron’s CGI and performance capture technology revolutionised the film industry • It helped other films such as The Hobbit develop characters like Gollum. • This is a quote from an interview with James Cameron about ‘The Life of Pi’ • After Avatar was made, 3D films • were produced in an entirely • different way

What does this mean for the future of 3D films? • 3D technology will have to be constantly advancing to keep up with demand • Viewers will be looking for a unique experience at the cinema • They will also be willing to pay a premium price for that unique experience • Directors will become more adventurous and will have a wider target market to aim at. I think that now Avatar has set the bar for 3D films, a lot more directors will be experimenting with using 3D technology and, providing they have the budget, motion capture technology. Now that 3D TV’s are becoming more popular, I think that Directors are going to be more adventurous in the production of their films as they now have a broader target market to aim their films at. Avatar: What’s the future of film? The Future of 3D Film • Avatar set the standard high for new 3D films when they re-invented motion capture technology • We should see more directors making use of the newer technology, proving they have the funding • 3D Television sales should increase dramatically in the next 10-15 years making the target market for directors to aim at, broader. This means we should see more films produced in 3D • 3D films are going to have to move the technology along so that we don’t get the same experience at home on a 3D television.
