  3. How did we do it? • Step 1: Contacted the Irish Heart Foundation. We were issued a Slí na Sláinte information pack. Slí na Sláinte Office Irish Heart Foundation 4 Clyde Road Ballsbridge Dublin 4 Tel: 01 6685001 Fax: 01 6685896 E: info@irishheart.ie

  4. How did we do it? • Step 2: • Idea was brought to SVUH multidisciplinary Health Promotion Committee for discussion and support. • Got “buy in” from senior hospital management and a written agreement that they will fund the installation of the route.

  5. How did we do it? • Step 3: • Got a scale map of our route • Decided on our route • Assessed the distance • Chose the signs needed. • Filled out route development form and returned with the above items. We were supported by the IHF Slí na Sláinte facilitator throughout.

  6. How did we do it? • Step 4: • Visit by National Co-ordinator to advise on: • Slí route • Local areas for our ‘time to walk’ routes • Approximate costing • Ordering signage

  8. Week prior to launch • Departments in the hospital were asked to nominate a representative to co-ordinate the event at department level. 23 representatives participated. • The role of the representative was to promote Hospital Challenge Day in their department and to get as many staff as possible to sign a pledge to take 15 minutes physical activity on the day.

  9. Step 5: The Launch On HPH Hospital Challenge Day, Mr. Eamon Coughlan (4 time Olympian runner) launched the route, along with a representative from hospital management and the Irish Heart Foundation.

  10. Other events on the day • DART Challenge: Between 7 and 9am commuters were asked to self complete a questionnaire on time taken to reach the hospital foyer from the local DART Station. • Guided lunchtime walks around Slí. • Free smoothies for all walkers and half-price for all others. • Initiated a ‘No Chip Day’.

  11. Outcome • 726 people signed the pledge to do 15 minutes of physical activity on the day. • 50 people officially completed the guided walks of the Slí route. • 71 people got involved in the DART Challenge. • Walks were also organised around the Slí for World Heart Day September 2007.
