  19. 3 Perhaps you found them: • Angry, Mad • Because: • Squinting eyes • Showing teeth • Eyebrows are squished in

  20. 4 Perhaps you found them: • Confused, Pondering, Concerned, Boredom • Because: • Wrinkles in brow • Mouth closed • Eyes squinting

  21. 5 Perhaps you found them: • Surprised, Shocked • Because: • Eyes are wide open • Eyebrows are up • Mouth open wide • Mouth covered by hand

  22. 6 Perhaps you found them: • Sad, Pondering, Tired, Mad, Lonely, Bored • Because: • Her mouth is closed & not smiling • Her eyes are expressionless • Her forehead isn’t wrinkly • Her eyebrows appear raised

  23. 7 Perhaps you found them: • Scared, Surprised, Frightened, Fearful • Because: • Her eyebrows are up • Her eyes are open • Her teeth are showing, but she’s not smiling or frowning • Her shoulders are hunched up • She looks like she’s backing away

  24. 8 Perhaps you found them: • Angry, Mean, Disappointed, Agitated, Disgusted • Because: • Frowning • Eyebrows are pushed together • Nose pushed up

  25. 9 Perhaps you found them: • Excited, Energized, Elated, Happy • Because: • Smiling with an open mouth • Eyes are wide open • Brows are raised • Hands are up

  26. 10 Perhaps you found them: • Shocked, Disbelief, Surprised • Because: • Eyebrows are raised • Eyes are wide open • Mouth is open

  27. 11 Perhaps you found them: • Happy, Excited • Because: • Smiling with all teach showing • Eyes are wide open • Eyebrows are raised

  28. 12 Perhaps you found them: • Not quite sure? • That’s what happens when you get too much plastic surgery!

  29. 2. Emblems • Substitutions for words • Specific verbal translation • EX: “OK,” “peace,” “be quiet”

  31. 3. Illustrators • Accompany and literally illustrate the verbal message • EX: Saying, “Let’s go” while motioning with your for them to go, it was “this big” while showing how big, making a circular motion while talking about a circle

  32. Illustrator • Asking, “What time is it?” • At the same time, pointing to your watch.

  33. 4. Regulators • Monitor, maintain, or control the speaking of another individual • EX: nodding your head, “keep going,” “speed up”

  34. Regulators • Who is sending an “I’m really listening” regulator message? How do you know?

  35. 5. Adaptors • Satisfy a need & are usually unconscious • 3 types: • Self-adaptors • Alter-adaptors • Object-adaptors

  36. 5. Adaptors • Self-adaptors: satisfy a physical need EX: scratching your head, pushing your hair out of your face

  37. 5. Adaptors • Self-adaptors • Alter-adaptors: body movements you make in response to your current interactions EX: crossing your arms when someone unpleasant approaches

  38. 5. Adaptors • Self-adaptors • Alter-adaptors • Object-adaptors: manipulation of objects; often happen when feeling hostile EX: clicking pen, chewing pencil
