  2. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” 8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. (Hebrews 11:8) • There are two key words in that verse which describe Abraham: Faith and Obeyed.

  3. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” • The first 11 chapters of Genesis are filled with disappointment and failure after God’s initial creation. • Adam and Eve • Cain and Abel

  4. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” • The flood • Noah and Ham • Tower of Babel • Confusion of languages

  5. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” • We may have been tempted to destroy mankind again, but God decided to choose one man and give humanity a new beginning. • He chose Abraham.

  6. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” • The Call (12:1). • When God Called. 1The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. (Genesis 12:1)

  7. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” • Abraham was called out of idolatry. 2Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your forefathers, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River and worshiped other gods. (Joshua 24:2)

  8. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” 7Altogether, Abraham lived a hundred and seventy-five years. (Gen. 25:7) 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. (1 Cor. 1:27)

  9. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” 28 He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. (1 Cor. 1:28-29) • Nothing on the material side has to exist prior to their creation.

  10. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” • How God Called. 2The God of glory appeared to Abraham (Acts 7:2). • Why God Called. • Abraham wasn’t perfect, but his walk with God was generally characterized by faith.

  11. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” • The Covenant. 1The LORD had said to Abram, … “go to the land I will show you. (Genesis 12:1)

  12. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” 2“I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Genesis 12:2-3)

  13. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” • True faith is based upon the Word of God. • God didn’t give Abraham reasons or explanations.

  14. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” • The Compromise. 4So Abram left, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran. (Genesis 12:4)

  15. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” • The first steps of faith. • Yes, Abraham begins his walk with compromise.

  16. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” 13And when God had me wander from my father’s household, I said to her, ‘This is how you can show your love to me: Everywhere we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’” (Genesis 20:13)

  17. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” • A Commitment. • Faith brings us out. 5He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there. (Genesis 12:4)

  18. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” • Faith demands a commitment to obey. • Abraham went out by faith.

  19. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” • Faith brings us in. 6Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. (Gen. 12:6)

  20. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” 7The LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him. (Gen. 12:7)

  21. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” 8From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD. (Gen. 12:8)

  22. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” 23But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land that he promised on oath to our forefathers. (Deuteronomy 6:23)

  23. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” • Faith brings us on. 9Then Abram set out and continued toward the Negev. (Genesis 12:9) • The life of faith is one that continues on. • Abraham was now in the place where God had called him, but his journey was just beginning.

  24. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1” • Like Abraham, each of us who have been saved has been called to follow Him. • We are to walk by faith and not by sight.

  25. “Faith of Abraham - Part 1”Genesis 11:27-12:909/27/2009Dane Boyles
