  4. Is the real meaning of Christmas lost in commercialism?By: Andrew Paul Mele • There is an odd progression of events involving the Staten Island Mall and the holiday that culminates each year today, Dec. 25. • The official onset of the Christmas season has become Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, when stores expect a bonanza sales season to commence. • At the Mall there is a huge, beautifully decorated Christmas tree in the center court with the traditional train ride to circle it, and Santa Claus is open for business and photos in the JC Penney wing. • What is odd is that over the past several years, the presence of the Christ child has gone from prominence to oblivion.

  5. Over the past several years there has been a growing attempt by some parties, particularly retail merchants on Staten Island, to eliminate Christ from Christmas. There is no shrinking, however, from these same businesses accepting billions of dollars in revenue at the same time. • Clerks are prohibited from saying, “Merry Christmas,” to customers and most of the music piped into the stores omits religious carols such as “Silent Night.” Indeed with one exception there is no evidence at the mall that Jesus had any part in the largess of the Mall retailers.

  6. The exception is the SEARS store which displays a beautiful statue of the Holy Family in its Mall window. We believe that businesses like SEARS should be frequented all the year round. Many companies enter the month of October in the red but because of Christmas, wind up in the profit column come January 1. It is estimated that 50% of annual revenue by many companies are realized during the Christmas season. And yet these same retailers intentionally obliterate the beauty of the nativity, the singular reason for their financial windfall.

  7. In our opinion this has gone far enough and we are preparing to work to reverse this deplorable trend. The NY Department of Transportation has joined the fray and outlawed the nativity scene from the Ferry terminal. Our group, Christ is Christmas, is growing as more and more Staten Island Christians are appalled at the attitude of these companies and the way their Christmas dollars are taken for granted • In the coming months we will be outlining an agenda for our response to the avarice of Island merchants. We anticipate our numbers to grow appreciably and pray for your assistance and support.

  8. Staten Island’s Best Practice The Presentation Sisters of Staten Island are assisting the “Christ is Christmas” group by sharing our facilities. As the group formalized its campaign, many of the Sisters became actively involved.

  9. The first meeting of the Christ is Christmas group was on Monday, April 9th, 2012 The moderator of the group, Andrew P. Mele, is the author of the initial article that inspired the formation of this group.

  10. “Christ is Christmas”

  11. As Christ the Infant came to express, “I am with you always, even until the end of time,” His message continues to reach out to the world, May we keep His message alive in our hearts.
