RWEDNET Background • Genesis • Enhanced quality education and research to facilitate the attainment of the 2020 Vision and the UN MDG’s • Promises: • Greater connectivity over fiber optic within and outside the country • Ongoing backbone Infrastructure development ARTEL, TERRACOM, MTN, KARISIMBI Projects • Result: Competitive prices for Internet Connectivity • New area of better Quality of Services at reduced operational cost and user charges

  5. 3. Strategic objectives of RWEDNET • Based on three following pillars: Infrastructure, Capacity Building and Value (Applications, services) Value Infrastructure Capacity Building

Accessing national telecom backbone through using Public Private Partnership approach • Output: Reliable Fiber backbone linking Rwednet members • 2.Enhancement of functionalities, performance and capacity building in Internetworking and other relevant areas of Internet Governance. • Output :technical and managerial expertise in area related to Internetworking • 3.Stimulate, foster and support collaboration and research among members institutions and external partners sharing the same vision

  8. 4. Organizational Structure • Rector’ Council • > Rectors of Institutions members of RWEDNET • Technical committee > ICT Directors from member Institutions • Management Committee > Coordinator and Network Manager of RWEDNET

  10. 5. Planned activities (Cont’d) • Capacity Building: Technical and Managerial • Strengthening collaboration with national and International partner Institutions

CURRENT STATUS • -Setting up the Rwednet backbone using a staged approach over the existing fiber optic and getting common connectivity to the Internet through INTELSAT • - Advanced Training in system admin. And Network Management for IT Staff from Rwednet members • - Training of Lecturers on eLearning tools • - Development of strategic / business plan for Rwednet

Challenges • POLICY • >Lack of ICT Policy and clear strategies within RWEDNET members • TECHNICAL • > Shortage of ICT qualified staff within RWEDNET members • > Shortage of Electricity • OPERATIONAL • > Lack of Coordination between government agencies and academic institutions in terms of implementing National ICT Policy (NICI PLAN)

  13. 8. Way Forward • -Setting up the Rwednet Data Center within the National Data Center (National Computer Center) • - Enhance collaboration with local and international partners to support advanced technical capacity and research within RWEDNET
