  2. 1. Results of Spanish American War • US became an imperialistic nation • Gained Guam, Puerto Rico, Philippines, and Cuba.

  3. 2. Yellow Journalism • Exaggerated style of writing – used to persuade the US to enter the war • “You provide the pictures, I’ll provide the war”

  4. 3. Open door Policy • Open trade with China – equal among all nations. • Leads to Boxer Rebellion

  5. 4. Imperialism • One country taking over another country for raw materials and markets.

  6. 5. Monroe Doctrine • The US warns other nations to stay out of the western Hemisphere in order to protect newly independent nations.

  7. 6. Roosevelt Corollary • Roosevelt added to the Monroe Doctrine • The US would act as a police power in the western hemisphere – Big Stick Policy.

  8. 7. Panama Canal • US built the canal for shorter trip – opens up trade and can protect newly acquired lands.

  9. 8. Dollar Diplomacy • Using “dollars” or investing in Latin America to gain power.

  10. 9. Big Stick Policy • Using the threat of force (the navy) to gain power in Latin America.

  11. 10. Reason for US entry into WWI • The unrestricted submarine warfare used by the Germans. • Sinking of the Lusitania
