  1. Perspectives of Stereo 3D TV Applications Development Dmitry Vavilov Denis Dovzhenko Alexander Anisimov Motorola-Mobility St.-Petersburg center October 2010

  2. Motorola-Mobility SPb Center • Motorola development center works in St.-Petersburg since 1994 • Russian engineers work for Motorola Home Business since 2005 • Motorola Mobility development center was created in July 2010

  3. Status of 3D Support Implementation • 3D TV sets, 3D video players, 3D projectors and other devices supporting Stereo 3D are already on the market • Some issues (insufficient hardware performance, lack of interfaces for devices providing 3D content, etc.) could not be considered as critical and inevitably will be resolved in the nearest months • Development of standards is still going on

  4. Motorola 3DTV Cable Set-tops • In April 2010 Motorola announced development of innovative 3DTV Cable Set-tops: the software enhancements for DCX line of set-tops provide consumers with Stereo 3D TV experience in their home

  5. Stereo 3D TV Content • Estimations of 3D video content market (CSTB 2010 conference, see http://cstb.ru/en/cstb/): • Quality 3D video content will not exceed 200-300 hours next year - it includes movies and documentaries • A few TV channels are launched in 2010 • Actually much more content is available. However it is not enough for TV viewers…

  6. Stereo 3D TV applications • Stereo 3D TV applications shall be an addition to the operators’ buckets of 3D content and could be created in the nearest future • Exact definition of the subject area and understanding of shareholders’ interests could be critical for 3D TV applications development

  7. 3D Apps for Content Management • Stereo 3D versions of “classical” TV applications for content management. EPG (Electronic Program Guide) or VOD (Video on Demand) are necessary components of the modern “non-stereo” TV environment • Some standard features like Closed Captions or Subtitles shall be also supported in Stereo 3D Mode • Motorola presented an EPG/VOD application at international exhibitions this year (NAB 2010, etc.).

  8. PC Applications Porting • We expect that the first group of Stereo 3D TV Applications will be PC applications ported to TV platforms : • games • educational and modeling applications

  9. Perspective Stereo 3D TV Apps • “Consumer mockup” - stereo 3D models of apartments, cars, furniture that could be created in addition to abstract description of these objects (plans, drawings) • Such applications could allow involving potential advertisers and can be actually beneficial for TV viewers because they allow easy modeling and save significant time when the user evaluates different choices. • In comparison with similar non-stereo PC applications, Stereo 3D TV ones provide better impression and could be linked to TV content.

  10. Advantages of Stereo 3D Look&Feel • We created a demo for Maps/Traffic application using geo data from one of its world-wide providers. • Usage of the third dimension allows showing geo and traffic info more distinctly in comparison with the 2D mode overflowed with details and colors.

  11. Conclusions & Recommendations • TV operators will need Stereo 3D applications due to lack of other stereo 3D video content - it will require porting of already existing 3D PC applications • User’s interest can be damaged by non-transparent integration of video and supporting graphics (EPG, etc.). So development of such shells should be the top priority for TV operators who want to distribute 3D content and 3D equipment • It needs to develop both stereo and non-stereo interfaces for the applications to help operators to start 3D deployment in networks with mixed equipment

  12. Acknowledgment • The authors actually appreciate our Motorola Mobility colleagues’ help, review, and consultations. Special thanks to Prof. Sergey N. Baranov, Albert Elcock, Dr. Alexey Logunov, Mark Tarlton, Yeqing Wang • …and thanks for Your attention!
