Dionysus. Son of Zeus and Theben princess Semele . Last god to enter Olympus; Only god that was not born of two divine beings. After his mother died from the awful glory of Zeus in his full splendor, he was sent to be cared for by the Nymphs of Nysa .

  1. Dionysus • Son of Zeus and Theben princess Semele. • Last god to enter Olympus; Only god that was not born of two divine beings. • After his mother died from the awful glory of Zeus in his full splendor, he was sent to be cared for by the Nymphs of Nysa. • God of the Vine; born of fire and nursed by rain. • He was seized by men on a ship. • The captain did not believe he was a god. • As a result, wine covered the ship and Dionysus turned into a lion; He then took mercy, but the Gods did not, and Zeus struck the captain blind. • He was the joy-god • The reason that Dionysus was so different at one time from another was because of his double nature of wine; He was a benefactor and man’s destroyer. • Died and rose on several occasions, and was named the tragic God.

  2. Pyramus and Thisbe • The berries on the mulberry tree were once white as snow, but the death of two lovers, Pyramus and Thisbe, changed that. • Pyramus was the most beautiful youth in the East and Thisbe was the loveliest maiden in the East. • They lived in Babylon, city of the Queen Semiramis, in houses so close together that one wall was common to both. • Both their parents forbade their marriage. • One day they discovered a little chink in the wall connecting their homes; At night, Pyramus and Thisbe would whisper with each other through the hole. • Finally a day came when they could no longer endure not seeing each other, and so they decided to meet that night at the Tomb of Ninus, under a mulberry tree. • Thisbe went to the spot earlier than Pyramus and saw a lioness eating her dinner. • Thisbe then ran and while she was running she dropped her cloak, which the lioness mouthed and tore making it seem as though Thisbe had been killed.

When Pyrumus later came to the spot, he saw Thisbe’s cloak and concluded the lioness killed her. • He took out his sword and stabbed his side. • the blood squirted and dyed the white barriers dark red. • Thisbe later came back to the spot to see if Pyramus was there and saw his dead body soaking in his blood. • She took Pyramus’ sword and stabbed herself because she could no longer live without him. • The Gods felt pity for the so they made the mulberry their memoriable.
