Phonics Evening. Thursday 17 th October. What is phonics?. A method of teaching children to read and write the English Language. It teaches children that the sounds of English (phonemes) are represented by letters or groups of letters. (graphemes). What is phonics?. It’s all about SOUNDS!.

  2. What is phonics? A method of teaching children to read and write the English Language. It teaches children that the sounds of English (phonemes) are represented by letters or groups of letters. (graphemes)

  9. How does phonics teach reading? “Learning to read is like learning a code and the letters are the symbols for the code. If you know what the symbols mean you can crack the code.”

  11. How do we teach it? • Systematic programme- Letters and Sounds • Reception on going all the time • Year 1 and 2 distinct 20 min sessions • Developed our own revamped St John’s phonic scheme!

  16. Reception- Start with one way to read and write each sound- simple code. ‘sound out’/’segment’ • Sound out and then blend to make words. • When we know the sounds we are taught to read by blending. When mastered this we introduce the alternative versions of the same sound

  17. Phonics sessions are fun sessions involving lots of speaking, listening and games. • Very important to sound out correctly.

  18. Consolidating- sounding out & blending longer words

  19. Is today Friday? Do you go to school in the holidays? Can you pay with chocolate? Are puppies playful?

  20. Golden River /ee/, /e_e/, /ea/, /ey/, /y/ or /ie/alternative grapheme.

  21. What can you do to help? • Be aware that longer words should not be sounded out letter by letter. • You should look at the sounds that are created by groups of letters. • If phonetic approach is used by child don’t be overly critical

  22. Praise your child for trying out words

  23. Let them apply their knowledge to read longer sentences and captions. • Let them read and spell tricky words and increase their bank of words that phonics wont help them with

  24. Continue to play with magnetic letters using a range of combinations, • eg: r-ai-n = rain blending for reading rain = r-ai-n segmenting for spelling

  25. Year 1 Phonic Check • National Government initiative. • First screening June 2012. • Statutory for all pupils at the end of year 1. • 40 words to be read individually with a teacher they know.
