  1. New STAR Event Demonstration: Recycle and Redesign

  2. A note from national office… *Workshop demonstrations are intended only as examples of the new events. Questions Policy: All questions must be submitted to the State Adviser. If the State adviser is unable to answer, it must be submitted by the State Adviser in writing to Andrea Chomistek at achomistek@fcclainc.org.

  3. Definition Recycle and Redesign is an individual event that recognizes participants who create a display. Participants select a used fashion or home apparel item to recycle into a new product. Participants use additional fabrics, trims, and notions, if needed, to redesign and creatively embellish the product.

  4. General Information Categories: Junior- grades 6-9 • Tables and electrical outlets must be requested through State Adviser.

  5. Allowable Elements • May use props/pointers • Stacking/overlapping is allowed • May use visuals • May use visual equipment • May useaudio • Spectators may not observe * See STAR Events Manual glossary for detailed definitions of these terms Though these elements are allowed, they are not provided.

  6. 30 minutes Participant set up 4 to 5 minutes oral presentation 5 minutes evaluators interview 5 minutes evaluators score using the rubric Total time required for this event is approximately 45 minutes. Procedures and Time Requirements

  7. Display Dimensions Display Dimensions • Freestanding = 48” deep x 60” wide x 72” high • Tabletop = 30” deep x 48” wide x 48” high Must include: • Project Identification Page • FCCLA Planning Process Summary Page • Coordinates • Fabric Profile • Cost Itemization • Time Log • Photo Storyboard

  8. Project ID Page • One 8 ½” x 11” page on plain paper with no graphics or decorations • The ID page must include participant’s name, chapter name, school, city, state, FCCLA national region, and project title.

  9. Planning Process Summary Page One 8 ½” x 11” page summarizing how each step of the Planning Process was used to plan and implement the project; use of the Planning Process may also be described in the oral presentation.

  10. Coordinates Coordinates are included in the display. They are defined here as other garments/accessories that compliment the project garment/ensemble or accessory and should be arranged attractively in the display.

  11. Fabric Profile *Prepared on front side only on paper not larger than 11”x17” and displayed. *Includes fabric swatch or swatches of each fabric used to make the project and all available information about the fiber content, fabric type, construction, finishes, properties, performance, and care.

  12. Cost Itemization *Prepared front side only on 8 ½ “ x 11” paper and displayed *Show a list of all supplies/notions used to make the product with quantities, unit costs, and total costs.

  13. Time Log A log of time invested in designing and making the garment/accessory. *Should be prepared front side only on 8 ½” x 11” paper and displayed. *Total hours should be shown.

  14. Photo Storyboard A storyboard contains photos telling the story of the project and should be prepared front side only on paper not larger than 11”x17” and displayed.

  15. Should be 4 to 5 minutes 1-minute warning will be given at 4 minutes Participant will be stopped at 5 minutes. Oral Presentation Specifications

  16. Oral Presentation Specifications (Cont’d) The oral presentation should be 4 to 5 minutes in length and is delivered to evaluators. Oral presentation is evaluated on: • Knowledge • Grammar and pronunciation • Organization • Use of visuals • Voice quality • Body language • Length of presentation • Responses to evaluators’ questions

  17. Recycling and Redesign Skills Projects are evaluated based on: • Design • Workmanship • Creativity • Recycling and Redesign Skills • Refer to Recycle and Redesign Skills Selection Chart.

  18. From Rating Sheet to Rubric • Clear Expectations • Eliminate subjectivity • Align with standards • Show skills developed by completing the project

  19. Rubric Logistics Each project must represent at least 8 of the skills listed on the Recycle and Redesign Skills Selection Chart.Upon check-in at registration, each participant will turn in 1 copy of the chart with at least 8 of the skills that best reflect the quality and difficulty of the work accomplished checked off on the chart.

  20. Adviser Tip Sheet Each new event has Teaching Tips for Advisers with ideas of how to incorporate STAR Events into your classroom and lists how the event aligns with Career Clusters, FACS National Standards, 21st Century Skills, and others.
