Introduction and objective • Douala Central Prison, Cameroon’s second largest prison housesdaily on average 3500 inmates • Observation of high HIV prevalence rates amongstinmates of this prison despite existence of a control programme since 2005 • Determine if thisis due to transmission of HIV withinthis prison and if soidentifyriskfactorsassociatedwithit.

  3. 609 New entries July-September 2007 Exclusion : - 30 (4.9%) refused 579 New entries tested Exclusion : - 51 (8.9%) inmates with positive HIV - 4 HIV test results not available 524 Cohort M0 Exclusion : - 215liberated • 309 Cohort M6 Exclusion : - 124liberated 184 Cohort M12 Flowchart of study

Result • Riskfactors for HIV like multiple sexualpartners, inconsistent condom use duringsexual intercourse, homosexualitywererelativelycommon in inmates • No IDU identifiedamongstinmatesstudied • Over a 280 personyearsperiod of follow-up, 5 inmatesbecame HIV infected: One at M6, Four at M12 • Incidence rate: 1.8/100 personyears (95% CI: 0.66-3.91) • Meaningfulanalysis of riskfactorsassociatedwith HIV infection not possible due to smallnumber of infectedinmates

  5. Conclusion • HIV transmission takes place in Douala Central Prison • Investigations needed to elucidate transmission modes
