  22. Fluency Good readers pay attention to phrasing and punctuation as it relates to expression. Remember, you should pause briefly at commas, and a bit longer at periods and other punctuation marks. Paying attention to phrases makes your reading more understandable. T402 Focus on Fluency

  23. Fluency Phrasing helps a reader understand which groups of words go together. Your tone also should change to let the audience know that you are reading sentences that end in question marks or exclamation marks.   32. First Draft My nephew’s bedroom was a mess. There was a mess on the floor and items were not put away. When I revise this writing I might describe first what the room looks like, what size it is, and what color it is and then I might give more details about whether my room is messy or neat.   33. Revised Draft My nephew’s bedroom is painted a beautiful blue with white clouds on the ceiling. There is a tree mural on the wall to the left of the door when you walk in and his bed is to the right. He has a monkey bed spread and curtains and he has monkeys painted on the tree mural. He has a rather large room for an eight year old but it really doesn’t look very large because of all the mess on the floor all the time. As a child I was a bit messy myself but nothing like him. Because of all his mess you really can’t tell how adorable his room is. T405 Revise

  34. As you can see, in my revised draft I have given the reader enough information to help them develop a picture in their mind of my nephew’s room. In many kinds of writing it is important to pay attention to the voice and tone of the piece. You should choose the best words to fit your piece. For example, if you are revision a how-to paragraph, you will want to include lots of specific details so the readers will understand you instructions. T405 Revise
