Europe is the leading net importer of resources worldwide, relying on resources from other continents to sustain its high living standards. This dependency often leads to the outsourcing of the social and ecological consequences of resource extraction. SERI's ongoing project, REdUSE, seeks to illuminate the global impacts of increasing resource usage in Europe, particularly focusing on the imported resources from the Global South and the associated consequences of their extraction. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for addressing sustainability and equity in resource consumption.

Europe is the number one net importer of resources in the world. Hence, Europe’s high living standard is partly based on the resources of other continents while the social and ecological consequences of resource extraction are “outsourced”. SERI is currently working on REdUSE – a project that aims to highlight the global impacts of Europe’s growing resource use, focusing on imported resources from the south and the consequences of resource extraction.
