The Hughes Scholars Program, led by Laura Whitmore, showcases the difficulties of implementing science outreach in local schools. Focusing on essential topics like climate change and greenhouse gases, the program faced various challenges including timing, curriculum constraints, and volunteer management. Educators expressed concern over prioritizing reading and math over science due to test-focused teaching mandates. Despite these hurdles, the program is committed to enhancing scientific literacy among students, encouraging a future where science is integrated more effectively into education.

Impressions from Teachers “We have made a deliberate, conscious, meta-cognizant decision to put science on the backburner for the reason to put reading and math forward. That is the result of a minority group struggling with literature and math.” “We don’t teach science because we teach to the test and science isn’t scored…” “Because of the NCLB Act students do not know how to work in groups. … Teachers don’t give up time to allow for outside presentation because of mandated teaching limits due to prescribed curriculum.”
