  6. Washington’s Farewell • Sept. 1796 would not take 3rd term • Warned of 2 things in his farwell address • Stay away from forming political parties • Stay out of foreign affairs

Election of 1796 • John Adams elected President (#2) • XYZ Affair • France was angry about neutrality • Adams sent 3 people to France to make peace. • 3 French agents (no names) known only as X,Y, Z demanded U.S. pay a bribe of $250,000. Adams rufused. • Came close to war • Adams sent someone to meet with Napolean, he was busy fighting war in Europe, agreed to stop seizing American ships.

  9. Alien and Sedition Act • Protect the security of the U.S. • Changed length of time you had to live in U.S. to become citizen • Made it illegal to write or say anything insulting or false about the government
