  1. LINDY-Elektronik GmbH Introduction of HDMI 1.4 29.06.2009

  2. The HDMI standard just got a lot more powerful, with new capabilities • designed to push the boundaries of the HD experience • HDMI Licensing, LLC officially released HDMI Specification Version 1.4 on • June 5, 2009 • Here are the major enhancements introduced in the HDMI 1.4 specification Introducing HDMI 1.4

  3. Announcing HDMI 1.4 HDMI Ethernet Channel More Color Spaces New cables New Connector Audio Return Channel 3 D Support Resolution: 4096 x 2160

  4. HDMI 1.4 • Enhancements include networking, audio return channel, 3D capability, improved performance and new connectors. – HDMI Ethernet Channel - Via 100 Mbps Ethernet – Audio Return Channel - Bi-directional audio ( upstream audio ) – 3D Over HDMI – 4K Resolution Support (4096 x 2160) – Real-Time Content Recognition - adjusting video settings automatically based on content – Expanded support for Color Spaces - especially for digital still image cameras – Micro HDMI Connector (HDMI Type D) – Automotive Connection System, In Car Entertainment (HDMI Type E) – HDMI 1.4 NEW cables

  5. HDMI Ethernet Channel ( HEC) Consolodation of HD video, audio and data in a single cableEnables IP-based applications like interactive IP-TV over HDMIEnables high speed bi-directional communication Transfer speeds up to 100 Mbps • No new connectors required but new cable material • Adds high-speed networking to an HDMI link, allowing users to take full advantage of their IP- enabled devices without a separate Ethernet cable • Enabling high-speed, bi-directional networking at up to 100 Mbit/sec. • Allow an Internet-enabled HDMI device to share its Internet connection with other HDMI devicesWithout the need for a separate Ethernet cable

  6. HDMI Ethernet Channel: Use Case HDMI HDMI

  7. HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC) • • Allows an HDMI-connected TV with a built-in tuner to send audio data upstream to a surround audio system, eliminating the need for a separate audio cable • • Enable upstream audio connections via the same HDMI cable • • Deliver audio upstream for processing and playback • • Allows the HDTV to send the audio stream to the A/V receiver over the HDMI cable • An Audio Return Channel-enabled TV can receive and send audio via HDMI, upstream or downstream, depending on system set-up and user preferences

  8. ARC Use Case HDMI HDMI

  9. Defines input/output protocols for major 3D video formats, paving the way • for true 3D gaming and 3D home theater applications • Allow 3D displays and source devices to communicate through an HDMI Link • Support for future 3D video standards, and the ability to automatically optimize the TV's picture settings based on content type. 3D over HDMI

  10. 4096x2160 Resolution Support • Enables video resolutions far beyond 1080p, supporting next-generation displays that will rival the Digital Cinema systems used in many commercial movie theatres • Enable HDMI devices to support high-definition (HD) resolutions four times beyond the resolution of 1080p • Allow the HDMI interface to transmit content at the same resolution as many Digital theaters • Formats supported include: – 3840x2160 24Hz/25Hz/30Hz – 4096x2160 24Hz

  11. Additional Color Spaces • Adds support for additional color models used in digital photography and computer graphics by • Support for three additional color spaces: - sYCC601 - Adobe RGB - Adobe ACC601 • Capable of reproducing more accurate life-like colors when connected to a digital still camera

  12. • A new, smaller connector for mobile phones, handhelds and other portable devices, supporting video resolutions up to 1080p • Smaller connector (HDMI Type D) – Designed for cell phones, pocket cameras, and other portable devices – 19-pin connector that supports up to 1080p resolutions – New connector is approximately 50% smaller than the size of the existing HDMI Mini Connector Micro HDMI Connector (HDMI Type D) Micro HDMI (Type D) Standart HDMI (Type D)

  13. HDMI connector – Comparsion Chart

  14. • New cables and connectors for automotive video systems, designed to meet the unique demands of the motoring environment while delivering true HD quality• HDMI Type E; robust automotive connection system• For in-vehicle and in-airplane HD content distribution• Designed to meet the demanding requirements of the road while delivering true HD video to a seatback or dashboard display Automotive Connection System

  15. HDMI 1.4 cables • There are 4 cable types now: • Low an high resolution cables with and without Ethernet channel • the cables without Ethernet channel are the same as previous HDMI 1.3 cables• Standard HDMI Cable – supports data rates up to 1080i/60 (same as HDMI 1.3 CAT1)• High Speed HDMI Cable – supports data rates beyond 1080p, including Deep Color and all 3D formats of the new 1.4 specification (same as HDMI 1.3 CAT2) • Standard HDMI Cable with Ethernet – includes Ethernet connectivity now• High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet – includes Ethernet connectivity now• Automotive HDMI Cable – allows the connection of external HDMI-enabled devices to an in-vehicle HDMI device

  16. HDMI Cable (Part 1) Standard HDMI 1.4 Cable Category 1 - (same as HDMI 1.3 CAT1)• Designed to handle most home applications, and is tested to reliably transmit 1080i or 720p video• The HD resolutions that are commonly associated with cable and satellite television, digital broadcast HD, and upscaling DVD playersHigh Speed HDMI 1.4 Cable - Category 2 - (same as HDMI 1.3 CAT2) • Designed and tested to handle video resolutions of 1080p and beyond• Including advanced display technologies such as 4K x 2K, 3D, and Deep Color Standard HDMI Cable with Ethernet - Category 1 with HEAC • Offers the same baseline performance as the Standard HDMI Cable shown above (720p or 1080i video resolution) • Plus an additional, dedicated data channel, the HDMI Ethernet Channel, for device networking • HDMI Ethernet Channel functionality is only available if both linked devices are HDMI Ethernet Channel-enabled!

  17. HDMI Cable (Part 2) High Speed HDMI 1.4 Cable with Ethernet - Category 2 with HEAC • Offers the same baseline performance as the High Speed HDMI Cable shown above (1080p video resolution and beyond, enhanced Color Depth) • Plus an additional, dedicated data channel, known as the HDMI Ethernet Channel, for device networking • HDMI Ethernet Channel functionality is only available if both linked devices are HDMI Ethernet Channel-enabled Automotive HDMI 1.4 Cable - Category 1 Automotive • Designed for internal cabling of vehicles and airplanes equipped with onboard HD video systems • Tested to a more robust performance standard, and capable of withstanding the unique stresses of the motoring environment such as vibration and temperature extremes
