  1. Kindergarten Math lesson using scratch By Justin Barnes

  2. About: • This scratch program was created to introduce kindergarten students to simple math problems including addition and subtraction involving apples and oranges. • Since this math program is for kindergarten students, it will only involve numbers greater than one but less than ten.

  3. A little something extra Math should be made easy and fun to learn, So I also included a little innocent humor, courtesy of Phelix the cat.

  4. Today’s lesson • There are only three math problems throughout the whole program. The first being an introductory question, then secondly, a subtraction problem and then thirdly, an addition problem. • Secondly, Answers will need to be written in letters (such as your name) and in numbers (the answers for the threemath problems) since the program will only respond to those characters/numbers.

  5. Info about scratch • Scratch is a very fun and interactive programming tool used by many Schools and Colleges across the world. The programming language is simple and easy to learn and involves methods, variables, conditional branches, loops and Boolean logic all in an “elementary” form that’s usable by young students as well as adult students.

  6. Help for getting started with Scracth • Start Scratch • Open file “K math project.sb” • Once loaded, click green flag to start • Read the Sprite’s comments (Phelix the cat) and answer his questions • Make sure your answers are with letters/numbers, such as your name for example “Tyler” and the problem answers for example “5”.

  7. Help Continued • If you miss a problem or decide that you are not ready to start when asked, the program will go back to the beginning of that problem where you left off. • Introductory problem #1 is a subtraction problem (2 – 1 = ?) • Problem #2 is a subtraction problem (4 - 2= ?). • Problem #3 is an addition problem (5 + 4 = ?). • If you get the problem correct, you will hear a cymbal with a corresponding message. • If you get the problem wrong, you will hear a drum along with a corresponding message.

  8. Conclusion • I hope that this program served its purpose in helping Kindergarten student understand some simple fundamentals of math.
