  1. Bring Your Own Device Initiative Novato Unified School District SMHS Library April 29th, 3:30pm

  2. Objective To aid in the creation of 21st century learning environments by allowing students access to our wireless network with devices that they bring from home. By inviting students to bring their own devices, we hope to increase the use of technology as a way to prepare our students for the modern world (broaden this). Additional ideas on the objective of the initiative?

  3. Important Points • This is a voluntary program based on teachers’ discretion • Students will be required to sign a separate Acceptable Use Agreement or addendum • Devices will need be reviewed by IT staff and an anti-virus software will be installed • However, devices will not be supported by district IT staff • Students are responsible for the device- if the device is stolen, lost or damaged at school, it is the responsibility of the student. • Students who do not or are unable to bring devices will not be impacted academically or otherwise

  4. Review our Current Policies • Acceptable Use Agreement/Policy • Stay general and be comprehensive • Allow teachers to take ownership of what happens with the devices- set classroom policies • Try not to set rules that we cannot enforce • Strong statement about lost or stolen devices • Something about photography/Video- #6 from Plum Borough SD. • Include separate permission for BYOD for individual teachers • Discipline Policy around mobile devices • Pose to the students what would be a good policy for our cell phone policy- Look at AR • MS- taken away and given to parent- third offense- Thursday School • How to make it consistent?

  5. Brainstorm- Questions and Concerns • How will we address the equity issues for students who do not have devices? • How to keep students on-task during the class time? • How will IT manage devices especially since the students are more savvy then we are? Concerns about the hotspots and using their own networks, bringing in viruses, etc. • How to address students putting their personal information out on the internet through websites, etc? • How do we make this less intimidating for teachers who want to experiment? PD • Will there be some way to rent a device?

  6. Upcoming Dates • We hope to hold a community meeting before the end of the school year to inform the community and answer any questions • Please sign up for the BYOD committee, we need your insight to collaboratively implement this initiative
