  1. The Solar SystemScience

  2. The solar system is the sun and the objects that orbit around it.

  3. The sun is the center of the solar system. It is a star.

  4. Planets A planet is a large body of rock or gas that orbits the sun. The solar system has eight planets, including Earth.

  5. Planets

  6. Inner Planets • 1. Mercury • 2. Venus • 3. Earth • 4. Mars • They are the four planets closest to the sun.

  7. Inner PlanetsThey all have rocky surfaces, and they are warmer than the outer planets.

  8. Earth is different from the other inner planets. It has a watery surface. It is the only planet with a lot of oxygen in its atmosphere. Earth has plant life and animal life.

  9. Earth

  10. Outer Planets • 1. Jupiter • 2. Saturn • 3. Uranus • 4. Neptune

  11. Outer Planets are made mostly of frozen gases. Their surfaces are colder than the inner planets because they are farther away from the sun. Most outer planets have many moons.

  12. Other objects in the solar system • Asteroids are chunks of rock or metal that orbit the sun. • Comets are large balls of ice and dust that orbit the sun.

  13. Comets, Asteroids, and Meteors • EQ: What are the characteristics of comets, asteroids and meteors? Most of the smaller objects that are found in our solar system are classified as comets, asteroids, and meteors.

  14. Comets… • Comets are chunks of ice and dust Orbits usually long, narrow ellipses • Ice turns into gas when close to sun, releasing dust

  15. Asteroid… • Asteroids are chunks of rock too small and numerous to be classified as planets • Most found revolving around the sun in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter

  16. Meteors… Meteoroids are chunks of rock or dust usually from comets or asteroids Meteors are streaks of light produced when a meteoroid gets burned up in Earth’s atmosphere Meteorites are meteoroids that actually hit Earth’s surface Meteor Crater in Arizona is the best-known meteorite crater on Earth. It was formed when a meteorite hit Earth about 40,000 years ago. (p. 703)
